35th Avenue closed this morning
« on: October 26, 2021, 06:22:38 AM »
It looks like a tree was knocked down near 73rd St on 35th Avenue.  Traffic was being re-directed to 37th Avenue.  Avoid the area if you have to go out this morning.

Thanks for the heads up! Maybe keep 34th Ave open today?

Thanks Itsit for redirecting the discussion to 34th Ave again!
Always appreciative for the opportunity to point out how great a resource the Open Street is for this community.

But my thought is leave the wonderful open street of  34th Ave alone. And maybe the road crews will remove the tree soon. That's what usually occurs.

i live facing the avenue. it opened extremely quickly -- by the time they finished opening 34th, that wouldn't have been needed.

Looks like 34th Ave is  self patroling today. Lots of vehicular traffic, few walkers and cyclists. Right after a prolonged honking session, it was a full flood of vehicles so walkers, be careful out there!

Loving the Open Street of 34th Ave. It's a special place and we are lucky to have it.

Thanks Itsit for continually reminding us of how fortunate we are that 34th Ave is an Open Street!

time to start seizing the vehicles of scofflaws. a day at the impound lot is a good deterrent for law breakers.

Actually I think we need to close the 34th Avenue Open Street until the Parks Department can have arborists come and inspect each and every tree along all 1.6 miles and ensure the safety of every pedestrian and bicyclist.  ;)

Scofflaws means tickets right? That means monies for the community and some that can be directed to the JH Community Center...maybe? Lordy, that would be an answer to some prayers.
Maybe we would get back the beloved dedicated bike lane or at the very least, have some civility with the e-bikes and the cyclists who go through traffic lights. And to help people. Those folks
that have mobility issues and are being marginalized by the open streets closures. It would go a long way to have real enforcement on the street as well as some data collection on use and much less use so we can really regulate the use of 34th Ave for the entire neighborhood.
  That would be sweet!

Very happy you are still reminding us to be grateful for the OPEN STREET Itsit. Thank you for these reminders. The community continues to be fortunate that the brilliant OPEN STREET of 34th Ave exists. It's kinda a miracle for us all.

Yesterday was actually a triumph of common sense by the community where 34th Ave was used as needed for the vehicular traffic we need daily. It was a beautiful thing to see where sense and sensibility prevailed! While other streets were facing problems and the honking was intermittently loud, people took it upon themselves to open 34th ave to alleviate the jam.
I think this occasional community take back will continue throughout the winter months where use of the open streets goes so much lower and many more folks are in vehicles of some sort - buses, delivery vans, school vehicles, city service vehicles and not so many but some personal vehicles. Usually when a project faces opposition, all parties take a look at what the obstacles might be. The issue here is the denial by open streets advocates that there is any issues with the closure. Many more parents than we would like to admit drop off their children in vehicles for just one example.
Let's see where this goes though...we now have a beautiful new field off Northern Blvd and a promised JH Community Center on the way. Who knows? Maybe we will get our beloved bike lane back instead of the kookiness that happens now with the free for all attitude. It would be much safer for cyclists.

Itsit, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Yet again you are reminding us of the marvelous benefits of the Open Street of 34th Ave. It is such a beloved resource.

And much appreciated how you are explaining to the single-minded folks who want to shut this fantastic project down why they are wrong.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing! Fanatics are popular in certain areas right now...negotiation not so much. Some don't trust the vaccines either and are soo convinced they are right. It's going to take awhile to read the whole community though and that's post COVID to be sure. Love seeing both sides, don't you?
