"My fear is that when the almost weekly parades restart on 37th Ave, there will be total gridlock."

Maybe the parades should march up/down 34th Avenue instead of 37th Ave?

I don't live on 34th Ave, but I could imagine that repetitive Sundays of the extremely loud noise that the parades generate would be a quality of life issue.  37th Ave is almost all commercial, so you don't have people living in homes inconvenienced by noise, trash, crowds, etc. from parades.

If it were one parade per year, I would say why not. But the problem is that there are a dozen or more.

Not to mention, there are a number of garage entrances that lead onto 34th Ave which would be not usable during the parades. I can't think of any garage entrances on 37th on the usual parade route.

So, 34th avenue should be used by people unless it gets crowded?

I have no idea what you mean. I was stating my opinion on parades being moved to 34th Ave. I will try to re-state in case you didn't understand: My opinion is 34th Ave should not be used for parades.

Yes,  I hear you saying, 34th avenue should be used for people to exercise but if it gets crowded they should use 37th avenue so that the people on 34th avenue are not inconvenienced.

Now that you mention it, I think it would be wonderful if they put a stage on 34th avenue so that there could be afternoon concerts in the good weather.

I think the point was that the parades close the street to all vehicular traffic. Since there are driveways, garage entrances, etc. throughout 34th Avenue, that doesn't seem feasible.  Under Open Streets, 34th Avenue is not closed to all vehicular traffic.

I think what people are commenting on is the fact that no allowances were made when one major artery of Jackson Heights vehicular traffic was closed and it has clogged the surrounding streets. Who did the planning and can they explain the concept here? Otherwise, a number of people are suggesting we need to go back to the drawing board and look at this closure post-pandemic and consider all the elements that it affects. Where did the 34th Ave traffic migrate too? Residents and businesses adversely effected are entitled to their voice and if Open Streets can work better for all, why not look
at new plans?

Happened to be by the Open St in Williamsburg. Berry St.

It's completely under-utilized compared with the huge success of 34th Avenue.

I live in an apartment overlooking 37th between 79th and 80th, and I think traffic congestion -- honking, etc -- is much worse than it was in 2019.

One factor not discussed here yet is that there are more cars on the road, driving more miles.  As for me, I'll bike or take the train.

Yes, there are more cars in use since 2019.  I have not been on the subway since feb. 2020. I use Uber now.  I may be in debtors prison soon.

Half of the available avenues in the residential area of JH are now blocked to traffic.  This is not an ideal situation for traffic.  It seems to suit people who do not like running on the sidewalk.

Again, and I realize no one cares, 37 th ave would be a better pedestrian street.

Alternatively, if we took one half of 34 th ave and made it pedestrian and the other half a one way street with 35th avenue as a one way street going the other way, I think that would be a good compromise.

It's not that people don't care, it's that people don't agree with you.  37th Ave would not be a good pedestrian street.  Here we are in a thread complaining about worse traffic, caused in part by the temporary pedestrian street, and you are recommending shutting down more streets which will worsen traffic by an order of magnitude.  If you want better traffic flow the solution is not to close down more streets.  If you just want to F cars out of existence through some kind of utopian magic that's fine but people aren't going to agree or find much relevance in such fantasies.

Close 37th instead of 34th, not in addition to.  It is quite common to close the shopping street to traffic,  not the residential street with apartment buildings.

There are no driveways on 37th avenue. Many corner stores have delivery entrances on the side street.  Delivery zones can be put on the side streets.
