Has traffic gotten worse?
« on: April 09, 2021, 11:06:14 AM »
I live on 80th St. and I haven't slept through the night for at least a year. Trucks start roaring past my window as early as 5 in the morning, screeching on their breaks as they reach the speed bump, crashing over the speedbump, and then roaring as they step on the gas again. Then there are the constant bumper-to-bumper traffic jams that happen every single day. I feel like I live on a highway instead of a one-lane, one-way residential street that leads to nothing important and connects absolutely no major corridors.

Are other streets in the neighborhood this bad and I just don't know it because I don't live on them? Has it gotten worse since the pandemic? I just can't for the life of me imagine why every truck in the entire borough chooses THIS specific street to go down. In fact, it's probably what will eventually drive me to move away, and it really saddens me.

Traffic has gotten heavier on many roads in JH because 34th Avenue is closed to traffic. I live on 35th Avenue and it is much worse. All traffic gets slowed by double parked delivery trucks on 35th avenue every day, resulting in more noise, honked horns.

Also, sometimes GPS directs traffic onto small streets to avoid a one minute delay on other streets. Maybe your street is preferred by GPS. 80th street goes right to Elmhurst Hospital, maybe they are deliveries to that.

As a cyclist, I have noticed many more cars on the roads since the pandemic hit.  I agree that the traffic jams seem worse as well......and the honking is insane.  But perhaps, I'm only noticing this more now because I am no longer going into the city most days.

I have a theory: It might be because your block is the first one that is southbound from Northern, beyond that closed 78th st area at Traverse park. Driving a truck (as is a car) west to east on 37th ave in the 70's is a total nightmare, with all that double parking from the shops there. So the trucks are sliding past that on Northern and crossing over to 37th or Roosevelt on 80th st.

What kills me is how this city permits enormous 16 wheel semi trucks to make deliveries to say, that tiny Dunkin Donuts on 37th Ave. The whole shop can fit in that truck. We let these big corporations kill our neighborhood because their bottom line is more important than our quality of life.

I am kinda sick of everyone scapegoating the open streets. This area is so lacking in public open spaces, it's ridiculous. 34th Ave being open is clearly filling a very important need in our community. And I say that as a car owner.

Exactly. 80th St is perpendicular to 34th Ave!  Folks are grasping at straws trying to justify some sort of NIMBYism concerning the miraculous now Open-to-All 34th Ave.

This has been exactly my theory for a while as well, and it's infuriating. But you'd think the trucks delivering to the 70s on 37th Avenue would drive down an earlier sidestreet, ditto the trucks delivering to the 80s going down a higher one. Like, wouldn't ever truck just drive Northern until it reached the numbered street closest to its delivery point?

In any case, I agree with you Open Streets probably has nothing to do with this.

This might make sense if there were any kind of loading dock or parking lot for Elmhurst Hospital at exactly 80th St. There is not :(

If a truck on Northern Blvd. is making a delivery between Northern Blvd and 34th avenue on any street that goes toward Northern Blvd, it has to drive past 34 th avenue to 35th avenue and turn back toward Northern Blvd.. This makes twice as many trucks on 35 th avenue and on streets between 35th and 34th run away from Northern blvd.

Really? What is that gate on 41st avenue between 78th st and 79th street? 78th street is the street the runs through Travers Park. (remember, buy me a car dealership!) so, the trucks go down 80th street. thinking is better than straws.

There would be very few, if any, GIANT trucks making deliveries on 34th Avenue. The giant trucks are the noisy trucks the OP is talking about.

An open 34TH AVENUE is a godsend to the inhabitants of Jackson Heights. Regardless of NIMBY attitudes.

No one mentioned giant trucks.  Giant trucks do not “race down the street”.
No one mentioned deliveries on 34th.

Perhaps you are overly sensitive about 34th avenue.  I have never said I hate the idea of opening 34th avenue.I just said I think it could have been done better with more thought about parking, deliveries and traffic.  And I did not see the point of concentrating people on one avenue during a pandemic.

Wouldn't it be crazy if the 34th ave Open Streets was found to be a Super Spreader and we returned to sidewalks, bike lanes and vehicular traffic for more safety? There is so much we don't know about Covid-19 and a year ago mask wearing was just getting started nationwide and kids were thought to be immune from getting or giving the virus.

Haven't slept through the night in at least a year? A year ago there was almost no truck traffic and very little traffic of any kind. It was probably the quietest this neighborhood has ever been since it was developed.
Our residential side streets happen to be in a densely populated neighborhood with more than one thriving commercial corridor, and is a destination for many, particularly for our restaurants and food trucks.

Fabricating badness with zero basis in reality appears to be quite a hobby for some people.
There is much that is known about COVID. This is not the Middle Ages where plagues were blamed on made up things.
