Thoughts on Terrace View?
« on: February 02, 2021, 08:21:48 PM »
My partner and I are thinking of putting an offer in on an apartment at Terrace View. People seemed fairly friendly, but after doing a little research, found some troubling comments on this board about the former board president (accusations of discrimination), as well as about the larger community in the building. Does anyone have any insight?

In addition to those comments, I'm worried about an overly intrusive board -- we are pretty quiet, don't host a lot of parties (and obviously wouldn't host any till after COVID, anyway), and don't plan on making a lot of renovations to the space, if that makes any difference. We're just new to co-ops and wondering if there's anything we should be aware of. Thanks in advance!

Thinking of Terrace View makes me ill. What do you want to know? How they hounded a pregnant woman out of the building? How they sued a gay couple for putting up moulding around a closet? How a woman said she was attacked ( the r word) and the president of the co-op board laughed at her? How they hounded at least two other gay couples out of the building? The talkative man they threw out of the building? How they threatened to sue me because I waited for a taxi in the lobby? It goes on and on.

The sister of that same president of the co-op sued the building after she fell and made believe she did not know her sister.

This is all very troubling... do you have more details about when these events all happened? How were the gay couples driven out of the building?

My knowledge of Terrace View is for a specific period around 2010. Since there were so many incidents at that time, there must be many more at other times.

They got rid of gays by lawsuits (for putting up moulding), by not allowing renovations, by putting up surveillance cameras outside one couple's apartment and by harassment by neighbors.

The building has been sued by some of the couples in various venues.

Yes, these things happened under the former president, but it was with the knowledge and encouragement of the residents.

Wow, if I had heard all of this, I would never have moved in, but I did move in. I am pleased to live here. There are many different people in the coop. The same melting pot that makes Jackson Heights wonderful lives in our building. LGBTQ, People of Color, all ethnicities, and religions, enjoy this coop. You will not feel discriminated against here. With property values down a bit, now may be a great time.

I won't say that the list of things didn't happen, but I believe they are all being a bit mischaracterized. I wasn't here in 2010, but I do know of some of these stories and they are not told in the same way jh35 tells them, but I'm not saying jh35 is wrong.

Terrace View is a nice place to live. Maybe under the old board in 2010, things were somewhat different. In the '80s, the building had lots of druggies that rented, but that was a long time ago and has nothing to do with today. It's all ancient history.

If it matters, I identify as a cis gay man. ;D

This is helpful to know, thanks :) Still very worrying to hear about the other incidents but hopefully the new board president isn't as tolerant of that sort of behavior.

And unrelated to all of this... do you happen to know if the co-op will let owners install a washer/dryer? (My guess is no but hope springs eternal!)

No washer or dryer. Two laundry rooms on first floor

And this is why as a shareholder and a board member you need to speak up and step in when the president of your coop board is an abusive jerk. Even if all of this long gone and there's an entirely new board, people who left and anonymous internet commentors (neither of whom fear getting a legal bill from the coop lawyer) will post about it, scare away potential buyers, and drive down property values.

That comment is presumptuous and ill-informed. I sued Terrace View and won. The building is toxic, in my opinion. The president may be gone, and dead, but the residents backed her.

^perhaps you should consider that in English, we do not have a plural "you." Reread that comment with the "you" being used as a plural you, and don't assume my comment was about you specifically. You're likely to not be offended.

lol he can do that but i just gave you the benefit of the doubt and read it again, and wondered who else you could be referring to seeing as you directly addressed his comment. in this case i'd put the error on your wording, not on his reading. i'd also refrain from giving people silly lessons in english, seeing as this is jackson heights, with a minority and immigrant majority, and you just sound condescending, captain.
