Advice for dealing with loud, partying neighbors?
« on: December 25, 2020, 04:55:39 AM »
I live on 82nd between 35th and 37th, and a back apartment across our courtyard (entrance on 83rd between 35th and 37th, right next to Joan of Arc church buildings) frequently has loud, long parties.  It is close to 5am on Christmas Eve as I write this, and they are still up singing, shouting, and playing music.

Several weeks ago, they had (as they do about once every month or so) a Saturday night party--I called 311, and the dispatcher I followed up with several hours later said police were sent and heard nothing.  I said the noise was still incredible -- but the only result was that the police called and woke me after it had finally stopped (about 2am) to see if it was still going on.  I'm not likely to call 311 again.

I don't know anyone who lives in that building, but suppose I can try to find the super...?

Any other suggestions?  I've tried earplugs and pillows over my head...

I'm a single working mom and sleep is precious to me!

That sounds really stressful. I don't have any solutions for dealing with the noise to make it stop, but regarding the earplugs, make sure you get some that fit well, and pair that with a strong white noise machine on a bedside table right near your head. The Lectrofan is quite powerful (check reviews).

Good luck.

Perhaps check in with your management company and neighbors to see if there are other complaints and then send that building's management company and board a letter.

This is good advice.  We think it's a rental building, but same idea.  Am polling building next door -- a bunch of us in this building are already ready to sign something as soon as we figure out who to address.  Thanks!  And thanks too for the noise cancellation tips!!

I'm late to this thread, but you can call the non-emergency number for the police instead of 311. The vast majority of calls to 311 are for noise complaints and it doesn't seem to be an effective method, unfortunately.

I do think that reaching out to their management company is a good start. Especially if they are made aware you will start calling the police every time it happens going forward.
