The era of big departments stores is coming to an end. Hastened by COVID.

Like the dinosaurs...

I suppose the internet now is like the biggest department store possible.

(Keeping an eye on Macy's...)

not a big department store chain. not a department store at all.

a designer clothing discounter with 13 locations.

and yet more people unemployed dinosaurs.

eventually, IT and tech jobs will be obsolete, and machines will be able to program other machines.

progress is inevitable.

Machines will not hurt humans, yes, but will also to protect their own existence. What's the worst that can happen?

Wrong. Century 21 is a department store.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_21_(department_store)

They defined themselves as such.

Over the years I have gotten a number of quality items for a fraction of the retail price. Will really miss the Rego Park store but truth be told, Daffy's was my absolute favorite.

I see some folks find it difficult to admit when they are wrong.

Much like some presidents.

I miss Daffy's as well and I will miss Century 21. Back in March, when it became clear that I'd be doing more cooking at home I bought some high quality pots and pans online from C21. It took forever for them to arrive (everything was taking longer to arrive at that time), but I'm so happy that I got them. I hadn't realized how horrible the pots and pans I replaced were.

Sadly, I think we will see more closures of local businesses like this one. It seems that so many people default to making online purchases from Amazon instead of considering NYC based companies.

I am so upset by this! I used to live a block away from their world trade center location and still work right next door. I went there for everything.

EDITED: My boss said they are planning to keep their more profitable locations open, I hope he's correct.

I hope so! I also hope Rego Park was a profitable location. I'm guessing the Manhattan ones had a higher sales volume, but the Rego Park rent is probably a lot less.

A different coworker just said that he thinks the main one downtown is closing - he is no longer working from home and our window faces one of their exits - he said that there are big signs up that they are liquidating their stock and sees people leaving with piles and piles of stuff they bought.

According to this article, Century 21 is coming back to NYC, although there's no indication whether it plans to return to Queens. https://commercialobserver.com/2021/02/century-21-department-store-is-coming-back-to-new-york/
