UPS Store - long lines
« on: June 01, 2020, 05:20:07 PM »
If you're thinking of going to the UPS Store, be prepared for long lines. I got in line at 10:15 am today on the sidewalk outside the store, thinking I might wait 10 to 15 minutes, but ended up not getting to the front of the line til 45 minutes later at 11 am.

I mentioned the long lines to the guy at the shop and he said it's like that every day. He said by the time he arrives at 9:20 am, the line is already halfway up the block. Perhaps afternoons is a better time to go, but maybe not. It could be like this all the time.

Just fair warning to set aside more time than you think you need to ship a package.

I stopped by Saturday afternoon around 12:45pm and it was about a 45 minute wait at that time too. I had thought maybe it was because it was the weekend but I guess not. Thanks for the update.

Hi Yes I had to go twice and each time waited 45 minutes. It's a very small store and just one guy packs and processes the packages.

Any ideas as to the reason for the surge in business for UPS?  Just curious.

My theory is that for a few months people were staying home as directed and only going out for the items they truly needed, such as groceries. Many people did a lot more online shopping. Amazon extended its return period by at least a month, and other retailers such as Zappos always have a one year return period.

So now that people are feeling more comfortable doing non-essential errands, they are doing all their returns that had piled up during the stay at home order.

It also just takes longer because it's a small space and you can only have a certain number of employees working at the counter and maintain a safe distance employees and customers.

Also, Frank's (and other places?) stopped accepting UPS dropoffs for collection.

There is a drop-off box on 37/78 st, but it has a very narrow slot.....

Staples?
Or pack your own box and give to UPS driver?
Drop boxes are targets of thieves and vandals, so maybe not the best alternative, at least in NYC.

i used Frank's as a dropoff for Fed Ex/UPS when i needed them, but most remote places have stopped service for now.

the lines could also be exacerbated by the fact that the UPS store is one of the few places offering printing/fax service. there are others, but people seem to gravitate here for that stuff.

Thanks for the responses.  All seem plausible.

Are there any other options? Can we all storm the UPS customer service line and ask for more service there? The line today was literally over an hour long. It's ridiculous!

Wow, that's tough, especially having to wait outside in this hot/humid weather (I don't like this weather although I'm sure some other people do). As far as I know, UPS Stores are franchised so most likely calling UPS will not do much. :(

Perhaps there are other options in the area, like the UPS within Staples at 93rd?

One of the last times I went to UPS Store, I was doing an Amazon return and I had selected the UPS Store dropoff as my option, so I wouldn't have been able to go elsewhere.

Obviously not an option for everybody based on work schedules, etc. but I've found weekdays to be better than weekends.

Yikes! If Monday was a good day then I'm scared to see what the weekend line looks like!
