rent strike at Washington Plaza
« on: April 09, 2020, 08:53:11 AM »
I would encourage people to withhold their rent and maintenance payments until the situation at Washington Plaza improves.

There is a dangerous dust situation in the basement which management says will continue for at least a month. The dust travels into the elevators. This is selfish during a pandemic. Skim coating and dry sanding the basement is not necessary at this time.

Delivery of packages has been curtailed. The packages are dumped in the lobby and locked in the booth. Tenants have to walk through the building to get their packages. This endangers the tenants and the workers. Unnecessary walking through the building obviously spreads germs.

Instead of sending a check, send a note that they should be more mindful of the tenants and the situation.

I appreciate your frustration but withholding rent may leave you in a tough spot legally. Have you reached out to the management to express your concerns? Surely, doing dusty work during a pandemic of respiratory illness is poor judgment. You may also call 311, as skimcoating and painting possibly aren't essential activities.

But yeah, even if it's legal, it's really poor judgment.

Other have emailed me that they have been communicating with the Super and Management for months.

Legally, at this time, withholding rent is allowed.

I called the mgmt office twice and left messages. They never called back. I sent them 2 emails and they were rejected.

I filed a complaint with the city. The Super lied that they were only painting. The city said it was essential work.

I emailed the super, he could not care less.

The co-op owners want the basement finished and their little gym opened.

Since the building went co-op management and the Super have been harassing the renters. They want us out.

The laundry room will be closed all day for 2 months. So, it becomes crowded at night. I got sneezed on the last time I went there at night. The Super came to talk about how much water was in the machines.  This was more important to him, rather than keeping a safe distance.

There has been dust everywhere for over 5 years, during the renovations. They continue to make dust during this pandemic.  It is just pure greed.

Seems like a very annoying situation. Why haven't you just moved to another place. Protest with your checkbook.

My guess would be because a current market rate apartment will cost more per month than the one the person currently rents.

This is probably the ideal time to do this kind of work. Most people aren't coming or going and the ones who are are likely wearing masks.

Ah got it. Golden handcuffs. Rent controls are good if you have them but severely limit mobility.
