Baskin Robbins site
« on: December 11, 2007, 05:54:38 PM »
What gives with the Baskin Robbins shop located on 37th Ave.?  It's been closed for quite a while now, but there hasn't been any indication of any news shops opening yet.  Anyone have info on the locale?  Just curious, since this is yet another prime spot for any inquiring entrepreneur.

I wonder about that place, but not as much as I wonder about the North Fork bank that has been vacant the entire 2+ years I've lived here. Odder still is that the interior lights are always on.  There's a realtor sign in the window...

At one point this summer there were workmen in the Baskin Robbins. I kept an eye on it after that, but nothing else happened.

This place just looks more and more depressing as time goes on. Anyone hear anything more about this place?

I remember during the blackout (was that summer 2002? 2003?) all of the local businesses really showed their colors.  Many were open in candle-light late into the evenings.  Some restaurants put tables out on the streets.  The corner store on 37th Ave and 79th street granted me credit because I ran out of cash and no ATM's were working.  No one price gouged... not even the stores selling those candles in tall glass with pictures of saints on them... that people were standing in line to buy.

And Baskin Robbins on 37th Ave?  As soon as the electricity went out, and everyone poured into the street on that hot hot afternoon, a lot of people headed to Baskin Robbins.  But they decided not to open their freezers with the electricity off.  They did not close for hours.  They did not send their staff home.  But they refused to sell ice cream.

Electricity did not come on for 24 hours if I remember correctly.  Jackson Heights got power hours and hours and hours after most of the City.  And by that time, ALL of the ice cream at Baskin Robbins had melted and had to be thrown away.

I will always remember the businesses that, by 8 or 9 at night, were giving away the stuff in their freezers.

Baskin Robbins?  Good riddance.

KC, your post reminds me of a gripe my sister had with the businesses on 37th Avenue that would close during the JH annual Halloween parade.  She claimed they were being cheap in not wanting to share some goodies with the kids.

Does anyone know who is the landlord of Baskin Robbins? The place has become very run down.

The following information is posted on the NYC DOB website.  It seems that quite a few of the storefronts on 37th Ave. may be managed by:

Agent:  Peter Lam
76-01 37th AVE. REALTY CORP.
60 EAST BROADWAY
NEW YORK NY 10002
(212) 226 - 8150

We had this discussion on jhfamilies... My understanding is that it's still being rented by NorthFork because Greenpoint was locked into a long-term lease before they were bought out by NorthFork. So, the owners have no incentive to re-rent it and are in fact asking for an extreme amount of money. Something like $21,000 a month.

Interesting story, schmorps.  Perhaps something similar explains the situation at Baskln Robins.

If this is the case, they perhaps NorthFork/CapitalOne should be pressured to make the windows more community friendly - posters, etc.

I'm confused - aren't these two different buildings - the Baskin Robins and the North Fork Bank space?
