Even though I'm neither Colombian nor Uruguayan, it was fun walking down 37th avenue after the win. Like taggie said, its nice to see so many happy faces (and dogs dressed up in their jerseys)! Also, that first goal was a thing of beauty! I see a bright future for James Rodríguez.

At my office, everyone drew out of a hat different country to represent. We've decorated our cubicles and have been bringing in treats for our adopted countries during their matches, as well as sharing articles about "our teams" and trash talking each other. ;) We have a TV in the office so we've been able to catch all the matches.

It's been way too much fun and the food has been amazing: Mexican tamales, Swiss fondue, Japanese mochi, Portuguese custard tarts, and on and on and on and on. ;) My adopted team is the Nigeria Super Eagles so I found a recipe for Nigerian cake which is similar to a pound cake, but a little lighter. I'm very proud to say it was a hit! I'm making Zobo drink for our match tomorrow, which is a hibiscus drink similar to sorrel.

I have to admit as a non-sports person, this is my first time watching the World Cup (or even soccer) and I've really been enjoying it. If the fever holds I'll have to check out the NYC FC when they open their inaugural season in 2015.

On a side note, this is my first post... my husband and I just moved to JH about 6 weeks ago after two years in LIC and before that 5 years in Astoria. I was/am a member of Astorians as well. Hi everyone. :)

Welcome to the neighborhood!
Your office's idea of celebrating the WC sounds like fun.
I'm conflicted for the neighborhood for the Mexican team, but today's game
was fun.
Guess we won't hear many honking horns this afternoon. :-(

I've heard this constant air horn all morning, but I think that's a holdout from yesterday as it's still happening post Mexico loss. :(

On my way home, the streets were a bit calmer but littered to the nines.  Folks danced on the sidewalks of Roosevelt.  And Roosevelt has sections covered in a weird white powder, which I suppose washes away with the rain.  And speaking of burned cars:  http://gothamist.com/2014/06/24/video_heres_how_astoria_celebrates.php

I've noticed the white powder also and I wondered what it was - it seems it's flour:

Colombia Victory Celebration
Soccer fans douse each other with flour celebrating Colombia's World Cup win over Uruguay in Jackson Heights on June 28, 2014.

It's great to see so much celebration in the neighborhood!

Is the flour supposed to signify anything or is it just a random thing that's safe to use to create a covering?

it's pretty much used across cultures worldwide, like the colored flour used in Holi celebrations in the Hindu faith.

Ahh, i had no idea. :) Thanks for that.

I'm going to make a wild inaccurate prediction of Columbia vs Netherlands in the Final!! :) Even though my head is telling me otherwise.

Those are my 2 favorites. If they make the final I won't know who to root for.

Here's a photo from Spain's Els Enfarinats Festival, a battle of flour and eggs. This looks like fun, but I'm not sure it would fly in JH.

It looks like the sale of flour has been banned in Colombia before some of the games: http://www.thescore.com/worldcup/news/527688

Here's a link to info and photos of a flour throwing celebration in Greece: http://avaxnews.net/fact/Revellers_Celebrate_Ash_Monday_in_Western_Greece.html

Here's a new NY Times article on World Cup fandom in Jackson Heights...

For the record, as of Sunday afternoon 7/20, a full week after the conclusion of the World Cup, there was still as small group outside El Chivito D'Oro trading Panini cards.   I'm curious to see how long this craze endures!

I'm pretty excited for the NYCFC that's joining the MLS and playing out of Yankee Stadium next season! Granted the games where the premier league comes over are the big draws but still, stoked!
