World Cup Fever
« on: June 12, 2014, 11:33:49 PM »
We've discussed the Puppy Bowl and the Sticker Craze.

Even Wink the Penguin is getting into the spirit.

How are you celebrating the World Cup?  Who are you rooting for and where will you be watching?

I've been watching a lot of the games in Astoria. El Basurero and Studio Square have been nuts; Sitio right off the 36th Ave stop is full of samba-ing Brazilians after each Brazil game, and even the little Bosnian restaurant bought a TV to show the games. I'd like to know where the Jackson Heights hotspots are, especially for the Mexico games!

Rooting for Mexico, USA, Colombia, Argentina and Netherlands!

There was one extremely noisy Colombia fan on the 7 train yesterday afternoon. Not one passenger responded to his enthusiasm. In fact they looked annoyed and embarrassed. As someone who suffered from living close to Arsenal stadium in London for over forty years, I can't get excited either!

Couldn't have been more than 10 seconds left in ref time before that wretching equalizer.  Still, I'm proud of the boys and am eager to see them go up against the Germans.

I'll fully admit to being a bandwagon World Cup football/soccer fan, but that USA-Portugal game was so exciting! And agonizing!!

Some pictures of Colombia fans at the 82nd Street station on Tuesday night. A happy crowd:

it's definitely been ... festive on 35th avenue today. one guy in particular, it seems, with a horn that sounds sort of like it's from a clown car

on the bright side, we're not in a college football town, so no one is likely to overturn and burn parked cars to celebrate a win  ;)

Super fun to see so many happy faces on 37th Avenue. With all the sadness going on worldwide, it's a fine thing
to witness this authentic joy. It is one happy day to be in Jackson Heights. Now can they beat Brazil???

35 Ave is quite calm compared to the rest of the World Cup Fever.  Northern Boulevard has mob scenes after every game, some that rival Astoria's mob scene last night:  http://gothamist.com/2014/06/28/video_astoria_erupts_in_huge_celebr.php.  The airhorns in Jackson Heights began noon yesterday and revelers partied in the streets on Roosevelt Avenue all night.  The Gothamist article has a comment that there were police in riot gear arresting folks on Northern.  There were lots of sirens and cops around yesterday.  Astoria wasn't all that much more peaceful.  In the area to grab dinner for a friend, I got out into the above referenced mob scene at Steinway by the R train, and had to make my way through this crowd.  I witnessed cops swarm a car with their batons, smashing its car windows until its drunk driver stopped - he was going the wrong way down Steinway Street.  Then they pulled him out of the car and slammed him into the pavement.  Meanwhile folks ran to take video and hoot and holler, but I got the hell out of there.

On my way home, the streets were a bit calmer but littered to the nines.  Folks danced on the sidewalks of Roosevelt.  And Roosevelt has sections covered in a weird white powder, which I suppose washes away with the rain.  And speaking of burned cars:  http://gothamist.com/2014/06/24/video_heres_how_astoria_celebrates.php

I was watching the celebrations from my window that faces northern blvd at 82 street and I saw no arrests. What I saw was the police allowing people to assemble and celebrate freely, only stopping people from running into the steets and directing traffic safely past the revelers.

It's possible I missed what happened in that comment, but to me it seemed like the police were handling the large crowds very well.
