Kids walking to school alone?

How many of you here feel safe letting your kids walk to and from school alone?  What age did you allow it?

I would love to let my 6- and 9-year old walk the few blocks to PS 69 with a few of their friends. I know they can do it, and it would give them a sense of independence. The problem is traffic. I do not trust drivers in this neighborhood and won't let me kids walk on their own until middle school.
