The baked empanadas at La Gran Uruguaya Bakery are great. Get one spinach and one carne, and don't forget to ask for picante, their homemade hot sauce, which has avocado dice in it.

Our favorite halal cart is the one in front of TD Bank, directly on 37th Avenue (at 74th Street). Be sure to go to the one that's located right on 37th Ave., facing Duane Reade, since there's another cart at that corner on 74th. The lamb and chicken over rice with white and green sauce is delicious, and the guys who run the cart are friendly.

that's a really good cart. have you tried Fuska House, which sets up right next to that guy? vegetarian chaats, spicy as heck if you ask, not so much if you prefer. i like the pani puri best. and, as with your recommendation, there's another cart around the corner on 73rd that i'm not quite as fond of.

No, I haven't tried Fuska House, but my wife and I really like pani puri, which we've previously gotten at the local street fairs. Thanks for the recommendation. We'll have to order it from Fuska.

I just enjoyed the beef thenthuk at Lali Guras again (it's a hot soup, but still delicious in the summer!), and remembered this thread.   What are your favorite seasonal cheap eats?

Breaking out a bit from the $8 and JH constraints, NYT travel writer Seth Kugel (a longtime JHer) has an epic article on delicious, diverse, and cheap eats around Queens...

Sompong Thai on 37th Avenue does a good lunch deal for 7.95
Includes a main + spring roll + soft drink, soup or salad

Another great pitstop for a cheap bite - "Los Chuzos Y Algo Mas" - a tiny Colombian place on Roosevelt that serves delicious Guava Juice ($3.50) and Chorizos on skewers with Arepas ($3.50) - which you can order from a side window.

It's such a weird location for such a great place. I have no idea the reason it exists there but it really is awesome.

the lamb noodles are fantastic, and the spicy cucumber salad is a perfect side -- but they're not kidding about the spicy part. i've wanted to try the lamb face salad, but they run out fairly quickly.

Be aware that the Woodside location is the factory that does all the food preparation for the 13 Xi'an restaurants and is only open 3 1/2 hours a day from 11:30 to 3:00.
