Please note: the organization that set this up also set the below meeting up

I will leave it to the reader to decide whether someone at a recent networking event has organized a sales pitch from a " hedge fund technologist who will show you how to use cutting edge software to automate your retirement fund at a fraction of the cost of working with the traditional advisor or broker!" is working in the interest of "soloists".

Aaron Yoon is a technology consultant who has helped businesses ranging from medical centers to beauty supply wholesalers optimize workflow and productivity management. For the past 4 years, he has been working with a New York City hedge fund (unnamed for confidentiality) improving their interdepartmental project logistics, implementing new policies and procedures, effectively raising team performance levels. Currently he focuses on helping middle-class income earners retire faster and richer utilizing financial technology (FinTech).

I'm comfortable with the above. People don't usually do free workshops without there being some kind of benefit to them. I'm cool with the idea of a group organizing free speakers to their members to provide some skills and tool to help with retirement with the idea the speaker could be doing it get qualified leads for his business aimed at middle class income earners, sell a book, a workshop etc. Certainly middle class people aren't investors in hedge funds. Additionally, it provides a networking opportunity for the group members, so it seems pretty win-win.

Ok, a couple of things:
This is a separate chapter from Jackson Heights (each chapter is run independently).
I regularly attend the monthly Astoria morning meetups and although I haven't been able to attend the evening workshops, my personal experience is that this is one of the less salesy/pushy groups (as oppose to BNI for example) and more of a support network - which is one of the reasons why I like it.
The workshops are intended to give soloists (members) the opportunity to deliver a presentation related to their business. Aaron is a member. Attendance is completely optional - if anyone thinks it sounds like a sales presentation, they don't have to attend.

Thanks to all those who attended!
Amongst other topics, we talked about common challenges around marketing, positioning, work/life balance and client relationships.

For those who were unable to make it, we do hope you'll be able to join us either at our happy hour this coming Thursday or next month's morning meetup!
