The Queens leadership sure picked a winner!! :tickedoff:

He lives on 37th Avenue and 83rd Street according to the article. Does he even live in the district?

We are surely blessed with our representation now. :o

Go figure right? If you have cuts and are bleeding you would want to go to the nearest
hospital. LIJ is a top notch hospital but my guess is that he was trying to lay low,he would be more recognizable at Elmhurst General.

Why did he leave the NYPD after just 12 years? Is he collecting a 3/4 disability pension?

Domestic violence is such a serious issue. It destroys so many lives. I wonder what his punishment will be. I think I read he can face up to seven years.  Maybe less if it's his first offense.

At Mr. Monserrate’s arraignment, the assistant district attorney, Scott Kessler, said that Mr. Monserrate told the police he was bringing his companion, Karla Giraldo, 30, a glass of water and leaned over and tripped, and the glass hit her.

Wow, so clumsy.

Yes " I tripped and the glass hit her, so I drove so many miles out of the way to NOT bring her to the hospital in our neighborhood". Right. He tripped, that's he story. Sad thing is she doesn't want to press charges, so it seems like we'll be stuck with him until he next screw up.

Hey guys, according to WCBS radio this morning, the charge is a felony. So, if convicted he will not be able to service.
What a pity!!  ;)

According to the Times article:

But the prosecutor said that Ms. Giraldo later said that the couple had a “loud and boisterous” argument about an item he found in her purse. He was holding a glass, which broke in his hand, she told officers.

“Then, in emotion, he stabbed her,” Mr. Kessler said.

Oh well 8)

In today's Daily News
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2008/12/20/2008-12-20_queens_city_councilman_hiram_monserrate_-1.html

'Troubled pol Hiram Monserrate has a history of mental problems - he said so himself.

"I suffer with adjustment disorder with mixed anxiety and depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder," Monserrate wrote in 1999.'

read the article - why wasn't this brought out in any election????

It always smelled unseemingly.  Let's kick Sabini upstairs to a bureacratic post to make room for Monserrate to run unopposed for state senate.  This is a guy the Queens democratic organization was eagerly and unanimously backing even after two separate scandals arose involving improper (and if anyone even bothered to deeply investigate, probably illegal) funnelling of earmarked money to cronies and political operatives.  The fish gave off a stench but our local pols only smelled roses.  Now he's become Hiram the slasher, the guy who not only assaults his g.f. but then also endangers her by taking her to a distant hospital rather than one blocks away, one, incidentally, which is reputed to have an excellent emergency room.   Remember when we had our so-called "community meeting" on crime at the Jewish center?  Walk in and you see a huge banner, HIRAM MONSERRATE.  Stay and listen, and you see this "community" meeting is no more than a self-serving opportunity for Hiram and his local pol pals to fluff up their feathers.  Queens Democratic politics needs reform.  It's stale.  No wonder Hiram sought a State senate seat.  Albany is a cesspool where pols go to wallow in the muck, immune to reality.  Everyone talks about fixing the economy.  But the economy goes south because we elect negligent and corrupt pols who don't look after our real interests.  We elect sleazy bullies like Monserrate instead of...  At least (let's cross our fingers) we seemed to get the White House right.

Here's a guy who has done little in the way of improving the quality of life in our community. If anything, many of his decisions have acted to deleteriously affect positive change. I personally found that anytime I needed his help or asked for some assistance, I got none, and found him to be quite arrogant.  Now it has become clear to me that he is part of the problem. Good riddance to bad rubbish.  Hope he gets time and they throw away the key!  What makes this even more shameful is that his colleagues on the city council paid him homage. Pretty disgusting.
