New Mediterranean/Middle Eastern on its way.  Couldn’t see the interior, but sign says they are going to serve falafel and shawarma.  It would be such a great boon to have a slammin’ falafel place nearby.

Sounds like it would fill a void in the area. Where exactly is it -- is it in the first block after Roosevelt?

 Yes, it is on the east side, About halfway up the block on the other side of Roosevelt. There’s also a new Japanese ice cream roll/crêpe place going up there as well.

 The name of this restaurant is “Zaytoun,”  which upon looking up is Palestinian for the word “Olive.“ So, yes, I think this will be a welcome and gap-filling culinary addition to the neighborhood.

Definitely "Zaytoun" and not "Zaytoons"? The latter is a pretty tasty Middle Eastern restaurant with two locations in Brooklyn. https://zaytoons.com

Curious to see what this is either way!

that would be excellent!

does anyone else remember Greek Captain, which was on 82nd in the '90s? really tasty, cheap seafood -- a spinoff of an Astoria place.

I remember Greek Captain, used to get take out from them.  If I remember right, they had huge portions for a very reasonable price.

We've been on a falafel kick- best right now are to buy either the balls or frozen mix at Trade Fare on 89th and make them ourselves. My 9 year old just had Mamoun's of West Village. 4 came in a bag- I called them Downtown Nuggets! Wish that were an option here.

We just bought what claimed to be a falafel sandwich from a cart on 73rd, next to the delicious award winning schwarma carts- it was not falafel. Some kind of breading chopped and fried like they do to chicken. Next time I go by, I'm going to ask him why he sold us that.

Looking forward to Zaytoon. I was hoping it was the upscale deli style eatery in Lower Manhattan. Just checked and that's Zeytuna.

Caffe Bene sells fried ready-to-eat falafel balls in the refrigerated section. Around $6 for a tray of 10 or 12.

Some falafel carts throw the balls on the grill and then chop them. That way the product gets mixed throughout the salad in the rolled pita. I prefer it that way.

If you are trying to go vegetarian, ask the grillperson to clean the grill; they will scrape it but some animal fat is still going to transfer onto your falafel.

Missmarty you must try Pahal Zan in Forest Hills. By far the best falafel. The place is super tiny but the food is outstanding and the owners are so sweet!!

Very happy that Zaytoun just had their grand opening yesterday. I didn't have a chance to try the food, but they were very friendly when I stopped by to grab a menu & congratulate them. Family run business. Bright & clean inside. The salad bar area looked clean & fresh. I'm looking forward to trying the food....& wishing them the best of luck!
