We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of
HANDYMAN/PORTER to work in our cooperative apartments in Jackson Heights, Queens.
This is a full-time position with an annualized salary plus an excellent benefits package.
Position Overview:
We are looking for a reliable HANDYMAN/PORTER to undertake upkeep and repair tasks at the interior or exterior of our Cooperative premises. We'll rely on you to keep our facilities in excellent condition by doing various odd jobs. You must be well-organized with strong general repair skills.
Handyman/Porter responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Cleaning facilities by sweeping, dusting, etc;
• Performing maintenance and light repairs;
• Performing routine landscaping on the grounds;
• Paint and fill gaps or crevices (on walls, sidewalks, etc)
• Undertake light installation (e.g., build cabinets, etc)
• Light repairs to equipment or appliances;
• Assist tradespeople with electrical, plumbing or HVAC repairs;
• Undertake duties as assigned or emergency tasks
• Identify and report the need for major repairs;
Requirements:
• Proven experience as handyman/porter
• Experience with hardware tools and electrical equipment
• Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems
• Good communication ability (English language)
• Well-organized and apt in problem-solving
• Attention to detail
• High School diploma or its equivalent
The list of projects which handymen can do are extensive and varies from easy-to-learn tasks which take little time such as changing a light bulb, to extensive projects which require multiple steps. The following are some but not all of the tasks generally needed at our cooperative:
• Basic carpentry/crown molding
• Ceiling repair/sheetrock/drywall repairs
• Ceramic tile repair/installation
• General cleaning
• Door repairs and installation
• Basic electrical wiring
• Fence fixing
• Flooring installation and repair
• General maintenance of garage doors and openers
• Landscaping
• Lockset adjustment
• Painting and paint removal
• Plumbing repairs
• Senior living modifications
• Shelf installation/shelving
• Sprinkler system (basic repairs)
• Toilet and flush-o-meter repairs
• Storage area repair and organization
• Tiling
• Trash removal
• Basic masonry
• Window cleaning/repairs/screens

Qualifications:
Qualified candidates must have: a high school diploma or equivalent; Must have basic work experience in related trade and basic experience in the following fields: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, etc.; working knowledge of equipment installation and repair; the ability to operate and maintain appropriate machines such as floor buffer, trash compactor, snow blowers, etc.; ability to regularly lift and carry items which weigh up to 100 lbs. Applicant must be a hard-worker, self-motivated and energetic as well as having the ability to tactfully deal with tenants. Must have US documents to establish identity and Employment Authorization; Fluent in English.
Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day minimum and ensure the schedule allows for proper trash pickups and sidewalk cleaning to mitigate violations, as well as any after hour EMERGENCIES. Saturday and Sunday for EMERGENCIES ONLY.
