Any Latin restaurants that serve great vegetarian options?
« on: February 02, 2018, 10:32:37 PM »
I have tried all Indian/Nepal/Bangla/Tibetan restaurants here. I am not really familiar with Latin American food. Being vegetarian, I am confused just by looking at the menu from outside. What are the popular restaurants that serve great veggie food?

I think you are going to have to do the leg-work for us on this one  :D What I have found is:
Tacos Veloz on Roosevelt has mushroom (hongas) as a filler for tacos, burritos, quesadillas. El Rico Tinto will hook you up with veggie things for breakfast or otherwise. That is as far as I have gotten.

I'll second El Rico Tinto. They have great food. I haven't tried their veggie only stuff outside of cheese empanadas, but it has to be good based on their other food.

Once again, yes: El Rico Tinto is great—vegetarian friendly, lots of fresh vegetables, accommodating to substitutions. Arepa Lady also has plenty of tasty vegetarian arepa options (as long as you like cheese). Taqueria Coatzingo has amazing cemitas (sandwiches) that they will happily make vegetarian, with avocado, queso oaxaca, papalo, cilantro, and other things... it's delicious. A little further afield, De Mole in Woodside actually has seitan on the menu.

I'm also a vegetarian, so I'm always on the lookout for new options that aren't so meat-centric. Mexican food almost always has good options for vegetarians, but meat seems to be quite central to Peruvian and Colombian cuisine, at least from what I have seen. I have a Peruvian friend who has made me some delicious, vegetarian Peruvian dishes, but I haven't seen anything like that on the menus of local restaurants (probably because they are variations on traditional dishes).

If anyone has tips for things vegetarians can try at these restaurants, would love any suggestions.

(Same goes for Filipino restaurants! Have never been able to find vegetarian food there. Which is fine if it's just not part of the cuisine, of course... but would love to know if there's something I'm missing.)

It's not in this neighborhood, unfortunately, but de Mole in Woodside is a Mexican restaurant with great vegetarian options well beyond just cheese (vegetables, seitan, etc.) http://www.demolenyc.com/

Filipino cuisine is tougher to navigate because so many dishes use meat as a condiment/flavoring, even when it's not a main ingredient. a couple dishes to look for:

Tortang Talang (the spelling may be off): a scrambled egg and eggplant dish that's kind of like the egg dishes you find in Cantonese places.

Adobong Sitaw: a curry that's made with different meats (or no meat)

and this pumpkin curry, which i cannot recall the name of, and really love.
