Jackson Heights in the Curbed Cup
« on: December 06, 2007, 11:56:56 AM »
Hey everyone, curbed.com (a great news/rumor source for NYC real estate) is having a best NYC neighborhood contest called the "Curbed Cup" and Jackson Heights is in the running!

Go to http://www.curbed.com and scroll down to vote for our nabe. Right now JH needs the votes (JH 43.7% vs. FiDi 56.3%) so pass it along to your friends!

In the previous round, JH beat Bushwick(Brooklyn) so FiDi may be a bigger challenge but we have more personality so there's a good chance we could make it!

Oops, I think the poll may be over. It seemed like the voting was still on. Oh well, still good to be recognized by Curbed IMHO.

The comments on Curbed are very degrading towards Jackson Heights and immigrants in general. The zip code envy in this city is sad, bordering on deranged.

I agree. It is shocking to see such blatant hatred and ignorance esp. from other New Yorkers. There were several comments though that were very supportive about JH and I think showed the ridiculousness of the negative comments.

If this was your first time reading comments on Curbed posts, I can see why you'd be surprised and disappointed.  But the truth is that the comments always tend to be this way - no matter what the topic.  For some reason, it's just the nature of the beast.

I suppose the anonymity factor is part of why the comments are so cutting and rude. Not that it excuses the rudeness.

I'm not a real curbed reader and was very disappointed in a lot of the comments. It makes me sad to know that there's so much classism and racism in the world. I'm new to this neighborhood (from Astoria), and though it has it's problems, there is such a sense of community here that I think my husband and I made a good choice about where to live.

Have to say the people are at their creative best when describing their "love" for JH.

Here are some of my favs:

Jackson Heights? Gimme a fuckin break. i grew up in that shit hole, and am happier than ever that I am now out of there.

Um, last time I checked, Jackson Heights was a shit bomb. And I last checked about 3 weeks ago.

WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS POLL??? IT'S A GODDMAN NO-BRAINER!!!!

The "hsitoric disctrict" in JH is NOT beautiful, by any realistic sense of the word!!!!. GET OVER IT ALREADY! JH IS A DUMP SLUM.

Jackson Heights/Woodside -- best food (if you like cheap fast food garbage) in NYC.

and last but not least, this one is the clincher:

Crackson Heights FTW!

"Shit Bomb" is my new favorite saying.

My wife and I are also recent additions to Jackson Heights and couldn't be happier. When we first moved here we had a short timeline in mind, but have since thrown it out the window. We have no ambition to live anywhere else right now. Jackson Heights, by all accounts, was terrible 20 years ago. Now it is now a great neighborhood, and we see a lot of positive signs for the future as well.

Regardless of what JH was in the past, or what it is now, we have to keep making it the best it can be.

I lived in Jackson Heights 20 years ago, and I have to say it doesn't seem all that different.  There have absolutely been improvements in some areas, and changes good and bad, but on balance overall it feels more or less the same to me.   It's always been "a great neighborhood."  Maybe my memory has glossed over, and hopefully  someone will speak up if it has, but I wouldn't say it was much more "terrible" then than it is now (and I don't think it's terrible at all!)

Jackson Heights vs. Tribeca

Fresh off defeating Bushwick and the Financial District in the Curbed Cup, Jackson Heights is now matched against Tribeca.  This could be a bit harder.

Visit Curbed and place your vote!

Polls close at noon on Friday.

I couldn't find where JH defeated Bushwick.  It wasn't listed on the chart or the bracket, as they called it.

They had a "play-in round" to determine the #15 and #16 seeds in the competition: Jackson Heights vs. Bushwick

And here's the current bracket:

Four outerborough neighborhoods made it to the second round! Maybe people are starting to recognize there is life outside of Manhattan. Probably not, but I can dream!
