What : ¿ Qué pasó, por qué no nos avisaron ni preguntaron ?

Alt Title :  What happened ? Why were we not advised nor asked ? A special town hall on gentrification spreading into Jackson Heights. This town hall will be facilitated in Spanish.

Time : 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m.

i'm sure there is room for one in Polish, Hindi or Punjabi as well if there was enough interest. perhaps you'd be interested in arranging one of those?

I take it you've been camped out at the Met protesting the unAmerican opera performances in italian since 1880? Those guys must be the worst!

or at St. Pat's for the unAmerican Latin they use in their services? Even more traitorous.

and, on a side note, it's tough to see why this is relevant to "sl," because his/her past posts note that he/she moved from Jackson Heights to Bayside back in the '90s because "it's nicer," and our neighborhood had become "too dirty" and "too ghetto."

If I read this correctly, they are opposing building more housing in the neighborhood?

This is the worst kind of pull-up-the-ladder NIMBYism: we get to live here, but we want to make sure no more people can live here. No more places to live! All full. But of course that's what leads to people being driven out and prices going up.

The people running the town hall, the Queens Anti-Gentrification Project and Reform Queens for Economic Justice.

From their description: "¿Ha visto los edificios enormes que se están construyendo en la Avenida Roosevelt en Northern Boulevard y en los alrededores de Jackson Heights?
El reemplazar edificios pequeños con rascacielos tiene efectos en nuestros barrios, uno grave es el aumento de la renta y que no podemos pagarla. Esto no es justo."

They are basically saying that if we build any more housing, rents will go up and people will be forced out. But of course, if we don't build any more housing, rents will go up ... which is what's happening right now.
