Veterinarian recommendation?
« on: January 20, 2017, 02:56:26 PM »
Hi all,

Can you recommend a good local vet? I was happy to see that Noah's Ark is close to me, but they charge $95 for an exam, which seems REALLY REALLY EXPENSIVE (our fancy vet in Park Slope was only $65). I' prefer someone within walking distance, but I'd rather travel to a good vet than have a mediocre local one.

Thanks!

Astoria Veterinary Group on Steinway. We have 3 cats and a 50lb pit mix. I wouldn't take them anywhere else.

I've been to all the local vets and while I liked Dr. Tello, he is pricey. I do Not and would not recommend  any of the northern blvd vet places. I've been taking my fur babies to Heights animal hospital. We only like Dr. Rheile (make sure to check before making appointment). It is a no frills, not new or state of the art but I trust them. The staff have always been so sweet and caring.

Thanks for the recommendations! (Hopefully we won't need a vet anytime soon, but it's good to have some vets in mind.)

On the Go Veterinary Service—they come to your house and they're no more expensive than going to an office. Also, incredibly kind and thorough. http://otgvs.otgvs.com/

Is Dr. Kamer still there?  I went to him for years but when it came time to euthanize my dog and I asked him to do it at my home, he said no.

Now I use Matt Nebel - he is strictly house calls and reasonably priced.

Since others are recommending Astoria places I'll put my vote in for All Pets Vet in Astoria on Ditmars & Steinway.  They've been so awesome to me and my cats.  I took one to a place near an old apartment just for a nail trim and the difference in handling was enough to make me never go anywhere but All Pets and Dr. Hatzi.  I'm in Woodside now and still go back there, and even when I've considered moving to Brooklyn I've wondered "hmmm but how long is the drive to Dr. Hatzi??"

Astoria Veterinary Group on Steinway -
SEE DR. JODI SMITH OR DR. FITZGERALD (BOTH WOMEN) ARE EXCELLENT AND VERY VERY GENTLE WITH YOUR PET.

I have been to so many and they don't care how they handle my dogs, these women I trust and they do not push you into getting anything that you cannot afford, they give you options.

Astoria Veterinary Group on Steinway raised their office visit to $65 now. But still I wouldn't go anywhere else.

Any updates on recommendations beyond Noah's Ark?

Ideally within walking distance of the 70's/37 Ave.

I want to say that I had a really bad experience with Dr. Hatzi - so bad that I feel like cautioning pet owners.  If you want the particulars, p.m. me.

My recommendation, among local vets, would be Dr. Riehle, as mentioned above.  He is not high-tech but he's kind, competent and he doesn't push potentially unnecessary treatments at you.

i went to Dr. Smith when i lived in Astoria. she was gentle and caring, with both the patients and their human companions. good to know she's still there.
