I apologize for rushing to judgement but, working in animal shelters, I see far too many people who turn in a beautiful animal just because they no longer want it,  knowing full well the likely consequences for the former pet.

Perhaps if some further elaboration of the circumstances would have made neighbors more sympathetic and more willing to try and help.
