So, what's everyone's "go to" Indian place in the neighborhood?  I'm looking to try something other than Jackson Diner / The Taj.

Samudra is great.  But if you want buffet or meat you have to go somewhere else.

Dera, which is more Pakistani than Indian, and really great.

Second Samudra. I like it because it is regional (southern India) and seems authentic. Any other Indian restaurants like that in the neighborhood, I'd be interested to know about.

I'd also like to point out that most of the Himalayan/Nepalese restaurants are good, and if you are looking for something a little more authentic than tikka masala and buffets I would recommend checking out one of those. For instance, Himalayan Yak, Mustang Thakali, Dhaulagiri, etc...

Samudra. But it's 100 percent vegetarian so if you want a meaty entree, you have to look elsewhere. My other favorite is Dehli Heights. I never get their delivery b/c the minimum is really high, but I often to take out or eat in there. I think it's better than both Taj and Jackson Diner.

the steam table at al naimat is also really good. best haleem in the neighborhood and the halva puri is outstanding. i appreciate the fact that you can get half portions of just about all the dishes, which makes it a lot easier to toss together a meal

dssjh:  Al Naimat is the only Indian restaurant that I go for take out.  With the food already prepared, I'm in and out in just minutes.  And what a bargain:  small container vegetarian $3.00, small container meat or chicken just $4.00.  I usually get one of each which is a lot of food for just $7.00 no tax.  Be sure to ask for the fabulous homemade yogurt.

Great tip. I'm going to try this.

Maybe it's better to phrase it as South Asian rather than Indian. Or do you really mean Indian?

i was presuming the OP wanted Indian, which is not nearly as common in the area as it was when i moved in circa 1996, or when i started visiting, circa 1981.
