Suprised the owners let the "artists" back after their poor form on the 5 pointz bldg.

The graffiti guys sounded like prepubescent children who lost a toy they borrowed and threw a tantrum

Yes, because suing and calling a property owner an "Art murdered" is very mature. Especially when they are one of the few buildings that allow this "Art" in the entire city. Just a bad look for the "art movement" in my mind.

I'm noticing a lot more graffiti on buildings all along the 7 line now that 5Pointz is gone. It seemed to serve as a collective hub for all that energy.

Hey, that's great.

The artists should buy a building which could be their new graffiti hub.

Here in Jackson Heights would be awesome.

(But I doubt Jackson Heights is on their radar. Most likely in Ridgewood, Queens. That's the artists' latest neighborhood.)

The landlord didn't play his cards well to the extent that this award is essentially a penalty for destroying the wall in the midst of litigation.  Had he waited, he could have torn it down without having to pay the artists.  I think this is, on some level, wrong.  In any case, the landlord should have been able to tear down the walls to invest in the neighborhood.  NYC is the type of city where those in power think that they can keep taking and taking.  NYC is the least business friendly place in America.  It makes me question how long this an go on.  At some point, people with money to invest will stop coming here because it is one government sponsored shakedown after another.  Sometimes it feels like 50% of the population are constantly looking for handouts and the other 50% are obligated to work really hard to pay for them.

The verdict seems just given the mean-spiritedness of the actions taken by the building owner.  But the ultimate outcome for NYC is likely that fewer buildings will allow graffiti murals over fears of expensive litigation.

Couldn't this have been prevented by a contract drafted by lawyers and signed by both parties?

i agree. the oligarchs and Trump associates make me sick, and i am tired of them taking advantage of those of us who work. fortunately, people are wising up, getting angry, and we're coming to a point where they'll pay.
