I think people paint two different (but related) pictures here:

  • Roosevelt Avenue is full of blatant sex offerings/advertisements. I don't really agree with this. It looks like a typical dirty street especially under a train track anywhere to me. Or does it depend on time? Are the ads in Spanish or Chinese? Am I too insensitive?
  • Jackson Heights is full of sex trafficking. From what I have read, it is true but this is a problem of a greater scale. The only reason that problem is here could be because of the very reason this neighborhood is attractive to many of us; convenience and affordability. I doubt if it would be a profitable operation if they tried to do it in Tribeca. I also think that solving this on the neighborhood level (hopefully not by gentrifying the area and making rentals more expensive) does not solve the moral problem for me as it is simply pushing it to other neighborhoods.

JHBG held a town hall meeting with the 115 Precinct Commander last month.

Would have been good if some folks would have raised this then. It’s great to communicate concern online, but it can’t end there.

And I have to disagree, Jeff, not many women chose to be a prostitute; it’s usually a combination of abuse, coercion, drugs and poverty.

lmaniace, when did I state that many women choose this line of work ?

I agree that talking here is only a tiny seedling to action.

Maybe you were being provocative but you did say this concerning these folks: What if that is their preferred form of work?
If you are coerced and/or abused, it seems a little off to say sex workers prefer this occupation.
And Jeff, it’s Len, OK?

Isn't it legal in Amsterdam? Should it not be legal there too?

You want to legalize prostitution? Why?

Because consensual, well regulated, taxpaying sex work isn't abuse. Legalize prostitution; prosecute, persecute and deport sex traffickers. Legalize food delivery; confiscate the businesses of bosses who don't pay their delivery people. Legalize work; prosecute abuse.

The problem with Roosevelt Avenue isn't "prostitution," it's trafficking, slavery, torture and abuse.

do you consider prostitution without all the negatives you mentioned to be a benign activity?

I live here too: yeah, yeah.

Abu,

I'm wondering why, of all the comments of yours I have read over this board,  really without exception, there's such a deep vein of negativity condescension and anger.

Is there anything about living here that makes you joyful?

Hi, Madalyn. Thanks for the message. My first reply to this thread was not negative: I posted 115th precinct's contact information, hoping that it would inspire action. As conversation continued and folks were debating about whether or not slavery is a bad thing, I grew inpatient and wrote:

Quote
"I think you guys are wasting precious time debating. Everyone agrees that enslavement should be stopped. Many will agree with Jeff that prostitution should be legalized. Just take some action if you don't like it and use this board to mobilize people, instead of blablabla."

Of course, the last sentence could have been written in a more constructive manner. Like what Len wrote:

Quote
"JHBG held a town hall meeting with the 115 Precinct Commander last month. ... It’s great to communicate concern online, but it can’t end there."

When "I live here" lectured me, I thought that "yeah, yeah" was the best answer I could give without further fomenting useless argument.

I don't mean further provocation, but I am still underwhelmed by the mobilization. I suppose most people stop by at this board in between coffee breaks. I think there's potential for action, but a lot of energy is being wasted. Since the possible sex trade on Roosevelt is not a cause that I see myself getting involved, I decided to shut my pie hole.

So, no, I have nothing against I live here. I'm sure there are plenty of joyful things I'd see in her/him. We're cool. I am at least. ;-)

I didn't lecture you. I disputed your characterization that all people do is "blablabla." I don't always agree with people on this board, but I felt this characterization was unfair to them.
But your response "yeah, yeah" was insulting to me personally.

This message board is open to everyone, regardless of whether their activity off of it is productive in anyone's estimation.  I work a lot, but I have attended local meetings and distributed petitions. That's the time I've got. Sorry.

the sex industry, as practiced in jackson heights, is toxic, abusive and evil, by and large. sex trafficking is a huge problem. prostitution, as practiced by a consenting adult in charge of her or his own life, should be legal. as should drugs. places that recognize that are healthier, safer and saner.

Maybe some of us could organize a prostitution ring with good business practices. The johns might recognize this, patronize us, and then the bad ones might clean up their act and follow suit. We can do this!

Apparently that works for Spitzer and his $1K an hour vendor.
