I attached a photo of our kitchen to get an idea on size.  Hope this helps.

Welcome to JHL and thanks for the info and the pic.  You must be very happy to be done with the renovation!

Thanks Shelby.  Yes, we were glad the rennovation was over.  We didn't ask the contractor to paint or install anything inside closets though, so we are DIYing those - got 1 room and the foyer still to paint!  Learned a lot from this experience.

I missed some of the comments looking to refinish cabinets instead of redoing them.  I did a project before at my husband's old coop.  They were laminate cabinets even but with sanding them down and using a rustoleum white paint, we managed to transform the space under $500 (including a dishwasher w/ installation from Craigslist).

Here's what we did (see photos)
- repainted inside cabinets & cabinet doors
- added updated door handles (changed the whole look!)
- updated the flooring to this wood look rubberized tile from Home Depot
- used featherlite concrete to refinish countertops, this was tough to do

We don't DIY that much and aren't very very handy but I'd say it was fairly moderate task with good results.  It probably took us 2 weekends to finish.

Feel free to ask me if you have any questions on how it's done.

Hi,

Our contractor did a pretty good job.  The cost for labor was around $5000 but it was bundled with the rest of the work so I assume it was somewhat discounted since we redid kitchen, bathroom, skimcoat, floors and a whole bunch of other things.  We bought Ikea cabinets and they are holding up well, it cost about $3800 for those.  Our countertops are caesarstone from a company in Woodside, cost about $1300.  Total with higher end appliances was about $14000 but I think you can do less given your kitchen.  The materials you choose could go lower too.

Congratulations! What a lovely kitchen. And 5k for the construction including the skim coat and other work is a really good price.

Thank you.  Just to clarify on price $5000 was labor for the kitchen that involves pretty much a gut reno.  This was part of a bigger quote that was $35k.

We did a lot of scope, gut reno of kitchen bathroom, demo of a wall between kitchen/living and a closet, build a new room in the previous dining area, 2 new closets, skim coat all walls, refinished old floors, redid new baseboard/crown moulding and doors, new electrical, some new plumbing.  Lots of work, took about 1.5-2 months at around.  We bought our own kitchen cabinets/appliances, tiles and baseboards.

I'm glad it helped.  Renovation jobs can really vary in price depending on the work you want done.  It was definitely good to get 3-5 quotes just to get a sense of what the real cost should be.  Good luck!

Katch, thanks so much for clarifying. You were making me feel bad!

We did a gut bath reno when we moved into our place, plus minor fixes to other rooms - removing a wall of mirrors and adding built-ins, refinishing floors, painting - that kind of thing.

A gut reno bath - down to the studs - was $20k. And that didn't include the cost of the new fixtures, tiles, and other materials. They threw in the other rooms.

I was like, wow, Katch did a gut kitchen for $5k?!

Now I see. Thanks!

Glad to clarify.  It makes sense though - contractors would like to make a certain amount to even go out for a job - so the larger the scope the lower the itemized items will cost.  That's also why my previous description mentions that it's part of a bigger scope.  Our gut bathroom portion was about $4200 for the labor with $1800 in electric/plumbing.  It was down to the studs too.  Most of our tiles, fixtures and cabinetry was fairly inexpensive so I think our total was about $8000.

Don't mean to make you feel bad as I'm sure other factors come into play - scope of work, bathroom size etc.  Ours is super tiny and we intentionally didn't tile the entire room.  Attached a photo for comparison.

I hope yours came out the way you wanted it to.

hi katch, who was your contractor?  I would love the contact info if you care to share!  :)

Our contact was:

They're not designers so you'll have to pick out materials yourself or hire a designer.  I'm an architectural designer, so my husband and I did the layout, design and selection of materials.

Please mention my name: Karen Cheung... maybe they'll give me an even better deal next time we have work done :)
