Has anyone used HomeAdvisor.com or
« on: January 10, 2015, 03:46:17 PM »
AskAngie.com? I've seen them advertised on TV. For fun, I tried HomeAdvisor.com for a hypothetical kitchen reno. It said they had 3 names for me to contact but wanted my name, address, etc. At this point I bailed.

It would be great if there was a place to go that was reliable.

I've never heard of AskAngie, but I am a member of Angie's List.  However, when I did my kitchen renovation I felt more comfortable using very local recommendations, such as the ones found on this board or on jhfamilies.  In the end, I found a blog by a local architect who credited her contractor, and I ended up going with him.  I don't find Angies List to be that useful for some reason.  Maybe I just can't get the hang of it.  I am planning to end my membership as soon as the time's up for this year.

I had a brain fart, of course I meant Angie's List. I tried them, too. When none of the names with which I was familiar from the neighborhood showed up, I felt more comfortable with a local recommendation, too.

Angie's List (like the local gym Blink) does this very annoying thing where they make it easy to join and, in my opinion, deliberately hard to cancel so they can milk you for as much money as they possibly can. I joined briefly and got nothing of value out of it.

I've also used Home Advisor. We got okay names out of it but not anyone we decided to work with. They're no worse about spam, etc. than anyone else.
