74th Street mystery
« on: November 10, 2014, 11:53:56 PM »
Three adjacent storefronts on 74th St are empty or will soon be empty: a sari shop, Mumbai Grill (which closed several months ago), and Arman Jewelers (which is moving several stores down).  This is either an amazing coincidence on a block that is otherwise thriving, or some big change is afoot.   Could Patel Brothers be expanding?   Another large retailer moving in?   Or are there redevelopment plans for this property?  I couldn't find anything on ACRIS.   Does anybody know?

i think it will be a russian nesting starbucks. eight starbucks in total, until you get to the innermost one, which just has one stool and one forlorn barista holding a pot of sanka.

With the amount of space we're talking about, I'm not optimistic that "something awesome" is in the cards.  I'm afraid we're going to get a chain pharmacy or a bank... something deep-pocketed enough to make it worth the landlord's effort to relocate the jewelry store.

If it's gotta be a chain, then I hope it's a chipotle.

BTW there are still double the number of Dunkin Donuts' than Starbucks in NYC… https://nycfuture.org/research/publications/state-of-the-chains-2013

As much as I love Chipotle, there is a 0% chance of one ever opening up in JH. Not when there's a hundred places here to get more authentic Mexican food.

funny, i really dislike chipotle, but i think it could happen -- after all, we do have a Taco Bell.

Taco Bell is a low-end fast food place, though. It's always going to have an audience amongst the working-class and value-conscious types. A place like Chipotle will require the neighborhood to be much more gentrified than it is right now.

I weaned myself off all fast food years ago, but the one thing I still get a craving for is KFC.
