82nd St. Business Improvement District
« on: November 30, 2007, 11:26:58 AM »
What's the deal with all the litter on 82nd St., b/w Roosevelt and 37th Ave.?

Granted, there's a lot of foot traffic there, but litter is *preventable*.

That street is a major point of entry for our neighborhood, and the mess there sends the most awful message.

And sadly, I don't even think more trash cans would help.  People would still just throw their trash out on the sidewalk w/o remorse!

Why aren't people respecting their own community?

There is a potential solution to this: the Doe Fund's Ready, Willing, and Able Program.  They do some street cleaning work on Roosevelt, but apparently not along 74th, 37th, or 82nd Streets (at least according to their website).  This is a shame... I seem to recall that they were doing great work north of Roosevelt for a while, but I guess the BIDs haven't been willing to continue covering the cost of this.

I think a better solution, and perhaps a more cost-effective one, would be to simply PREVENT the litter in the first place?

Can the local leadership, or Western JH Alliance do some kind of public education program?

Litter should NOT have to be a problem.

Current situation:

  • Pedestrian has trash.
  • Releases fingers.
  • Trash falls on ground.
  • Creates eyesore.

Proposed situation:
  • Pedestrian has trash.
  • Walks a few extra steps to trash can.
  • Releases fingers OVER trash can.
  • Pedestrian no longer has trash.
  • Street still clean.

73rd street and 74th street between 37th Ave and Roosevelt Ave have the same problem.

And the business owners don't care if the street is full of garbage, either.
We welcome diversity in our neighborhood.  but we should not welcome people who don't respect the public rule.
I agree that we should do some kind of campaign to raise the awareness or educational program to teach people how to trash garbage.

Just to let you know, the 82nd Street BID is the biggest load of B/S around.

Years ago they were excelletn, streets were clean, there was a beautiful x-mas tree lighting ceremony.

Things have just gone down the tubes, with overpayed and lax leadership.

As for 74th Street, the merchants refuse to form a BID, because they would have to pay in order for their filthy. trash and rat infested streets to be cleaned.

FAIR????

I guess paying money is a concern, and hell, I'm sure their businesses aren't suffering.

It just strikes me as strange that both area businesses and local residents wouldn't WANT their community to look nice.

I just. dont'. get it.

I've only lived here for a year and a half, and I already can't stand 82nd. St.

I too cannot stand 82nd street. I used to walk to the 82nd street station but couldn't take how disgusting that street is in the morning. There is trash everywhere and smells like garbage. It is no better in the afternoon as the street vendors narrow the overcrowded sidewalks.  There are even homeless people camping out in Chase Bank's ATM room. The BID really needs to implement an action plan to clean up 82nd street. I now take a bus or walk to Roosevelt station and  refuse to shop on 82nd street.

The New York Post
Filthy biz district’s boss gets broomed
By JOSH MARGOLIN and SALLY GOLDENBERG
Last Updated: 3:20 AM, December 5, 2011

The Bloomberg administration has fired the longtime boss of a taxpayer-funded business-improvement district in Queens, vowing to target other bumbling leaders, too.

BID boss Sharada Devi was recently canned from her $45,000-a-year job overseeing a district in Jackson Heights and Elmhurst after a City Council member complained about graffiti, garbage and neglect along Roosevelt Avenue and 82nd Street, the BID’s central corridors.

“These are not entitlement jobs,” warned Small Business Commissioner Rob Walsh. “I oversee the BID program, and I was embarrassed.

“It was unacceptable. There was just such neglect. Blatant neglect.”

...

Walsh said he found no evidence of corruption, just ineptitude. “The business directory hadn’t even been updated in five years,” he said.

GOOD! I went in there one time to do a program or event with them, and she was totally unhelpful and disregarded anything I had to say. She really made me lose faith in the BIDs.

Hopefully some good news for the 82nd Street businesses...

Queens Times Ledger
January 7, 2012
New director picked to lead 82nd St. BID
By Rebecca Henely

The 82nd Street Business Improvement District named Seth Taylor, who previously worked at three different business improvement partnerships throughout the city, as its executive director two weeks ago.

Taylor replaces Sharada Devi, who was fired from the BID’s board in December due to incompetence, according to City Small Business Commissioner Robert Walsh. The commissioner said that in the wake of her firing, he and the new director would be working to drastically improve the commercial strip in Jackson Heights and Elmhurst over 100 days.

“I am extremely excited about the job and really looking forward to getting out there,” Taylor said.

Walsh said Taylor’s previous experience made him stand out among the seven people who were interviewed for the job. Taylor was a project manager for the 34th Street Partnership/Bryant Park Corp. in Manhattan, business services manager for the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and director of economic development at the Union Square Partnership.

I know they have been refusing commuity's request, but now it is time to pressure merchants on 73st and 74th st to form BID to keep the streets clean, again!!

Gee how about informing litter laws ( and honking) between the two NYS would be in the black for the next century.

It's great to see things looking up on 82nd and it was a good story on NY1.

I'm curious about the last throw away line in the story.  They might consider expanding the BID out to Citi Field?  Really?  Does that make any sense?
