Kitchen!
« on: July 20, 2014, 01:12:17 PM »
So, about 7 years after I posted here on this board about my plans to renovate my kitchen, I finally did it!!  I had a really wonderful and reasonably priced contractor who guided me through the entire thing and did careful, tasteful, accurate work.  If you would like to contact him about your own jobs, his name is Robert Roses and he can be reached at (deleted)

He does all types of interiors.  I was lucky to find him -- I first heard of him here on this board, but I also found an architect's blog that credited him for contracting work and that's what inspired me to contact him.  Frances Temple-West Architect, Jackson Heights Kitchen

I am attaching some pics of my own kitchen.

Also, I'd like to thank another member I met here on this board who helped me so much initially with basic advice and encouragement.  I was a newbie renovator and the advice really helped. :)

Your kitchen looks amazing!  I love the sleek look of the cabinetry.  I've visioned similar choices for a possible a kitchen renovation, including the refrigerator.  The freezer drawer just seems so much more practical than traditional styles.  Great look overall!

Thanks!  Most of the kitchen is Ikea.  The fridge is a Fisher Paykel.

It looks amazing! I'm just starting my kitchen reno so this gives me hope that it'll all be worth it :) Did you get your counter top at Ikea as well? Also - just out of curiosity - why did you choose the hard wood floors over tile?

Yes, I got the quartz countertop at Ikea.  If you purchase during one of the kitchen sales (there is one through August 24), then you can also get 20% off the counter and installation as well as all the cabinets, etc.  I was really confused about what I should do about the floors, but the JHLife member I met at the beginning of the process encouraged me to keep the wood floors...so that is what I did!  I'm sorry I can't really be any more helpful than that on the floor issue.   Maybe someone else can chime in on the pros and cons of various types of floors.

Also, regarding the Ikea sale-  my contractor assisted me in purchasing everything before the end of the last sale in April, even though the demolition hadn't been started yet.  He told me you can postpone delivery of items for one full month without paying a storage fee, so that's what we did.

Thanks for all of the info! One last question - how long did the entire reno process take?

About 6 weeks, which included an unexpected delay with the countertop installation.

I've heard that wooden floors are easier on your feet, thereby reducing stress on your back.  This is helpful if you plan on spending a good amount of time in your kitchen, of course.  I think it adds a touch of original charm also.
