There is a large sign about construction outside the station on Broadway, right near where several of the buses turn right out of the terminal to head towards 35th Ave or Roosevelt.  It says something about two escalators being replaced and that it's projected to last into 2015 and that the budget is $11 million. The information on the sign did not seem to match what was going on with the stairwells, though, so I'm really not sure what's going on inside.

It occurred to me that perhaps they are corralling like cattle now to get people used to using the correct sides of the stairwells when the escalators are not in service.  If that's the case, prepare for some really horrible congestion on those stairwells in the near future  :-[

Yes, I think you're right.   The 74th St. escalators are walled off for replacement.  They set up the barriers to try to improve "traffic" flow in the station.   During rush hour today, things weren't too bad.   Hopefully they'll stay this way for the rest of the summer.   Expect the real craziness to start after Labor Day, when commuters have returned from their summer vacations and school is back in session.

I think the 73rd Street escalators are still in service, so anybody needing to transfer between the 7 and the E/F/M/R should use the westernmost end of the platform.

jenni_squirrel, if it's driving you nuts, you can use the entrance on 37th Road on Diversity Plaza if it's not too far out of your way.  Nothing has changed there.

it is pretty difficult to navigate. and, in typically wasteful MTA fashion, there were four or so workers standing next to the yellow police tape dividers, telling people not to go under them. nice that they can afford that, but not token booth clerks.

Except for the fact that people need to get through it to use the elevator if they need assistance. So you could just walk through the hole created.. baffling but whatever I am still able to get down there it's not THAT big of a deal.

I saw people crossing the barrier while the employee looked on.  No questions asked.  Hmmm...

I asked an MTA employee who was standing nearby last night, he said the barriers (they're replacing the tape with metal dividers) will be up until at least January 2015. It is their (IMO, misguided) attempt to manage stair traffic.

During the evening commute, when the larger number of riders are exiting at Roosevelt, they still have the smaller side as the exit stairs. I think it's unnecessary, riders can self-regulate.

who wants to start the pool as to:
a) first person to get pushed down the stairs by someone running the stairs in the 'wrong' direction'
b) first fist fight generated by similar pushing on level ground?

I'm with you on that.  Their attempt to "manage" stair traffic is actually causing stair traffic.  And as dssjh said, such a waste of money!  I may start using the Diversity Plaza entrance.

It does look awful the way it is set up. But getting through there when there are large crowds has been rediculous. People seem to disregard, or abandaned, or just don't care about the old standard of stay to the right. Those stairs had been a free for all.

It aught to be simple. There are 3 sections. Stay to the right. That should mean one section up, one section down, and the middle is wide enough to have one person at a time doing both. Of course the middle section can be all one way or the other according to traffic. But NO people don't seem to get it.

Add on top of the confusion That there is always someone who wants to take the wholestair to carry a baby stroller or the people who stop at the top or bottom, or middle, to check cell phones. Is it really that important to see what's on your cell right then and there? Move to the right side or simply wait till you are out of the way.

Can we call what they are doing a lesson in manners?

Bottom line is a large number of people care about nothing but what they are doing or what's important to them with no regard as to how it affects those around them. It will never change unless forced.

Well I wish they would enforce some manners on the 7 train.  It may have won for the best subway line recently, but it sure has the most inconsiderate and annoying riders.  I could make a list of violations but it'd be too long and I'm tired :P

I can't wait until school begins in full swing.
Better yet-
Imagine holiday shoppers?
Most people do NOT observe keeping to the right,.or walking "single file"
A real pet peeve even when walking on the sidewalk!
Keep safe!

I filed an complaint about this on MTA's site. They've removed the yellow tape that they used to cordon off some areas but this continues to be absolutely inane.
