Jackson Heights Life

for Vietnamese, so far I have only tried Pho Bang, the large restauarant in the small shopping mall with the parking lot in Elmhurst by the Asian "New York Supermarket."  I've liked it enough to go back three times, but I have also heard that Thai Son near the Roosevelt station is supposed to be really good.

Thai Son is (in my opinion) the best and closest Vietnamese restaurant.
In fact, it's probably my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood.
Their Pho, salt-and-pepper/crispy squid, grilled beef in grape leaves, spring rolls
and curried chicken or beef are among our favorite dishes there.
The iced Vietnamese coffee and rainbow ices are great too, as are
the bahn mi sandwiches, which aren't on the menu.
It is on the other side of the train station (4010 74th St).

They are made to order. I have only had them at lunchtime, but I'm sure you could
get them anytime. No secret password or anything — just ask!

We are long time Thaison supporters, first in Chinatown and then when they opened here. The problem however with all of the Vietnamese places in New York, they seem to all be focused around southern Vietnamese, so if you are fan more of the central or northern specialties, its harder to find. But their Pho broth is so far the best in the area.

I finally made it to Thai Son for dinner last night.  Very yummy!  The place always seems crowded, but not so crowded that you can't get a table (unlike the popular Pho Bang in Elmhurst, where you can wait a long time for a table).   And their menu is more extensive than many other Vietnamese restaurants I've been to.

You're thinking of Korean BBQ, I believe.

For someone who loves most Asian foods, I have never fallen for Vietnamese.  Isn't that style where you have raw meats and things brought to the table and you cook it yourself?  I had that in the City, I think in the 30s off Ave. of The Americas and didn't like the spices.  Is that it?

Buddy, I think you are forgetting your promise to yourself to try every restaurant mentioned on this board.  Get yourself to Thai Son.  Actually,  I think you would like it.  Try the dish that has grilled chicken with sides of rice noodles, fresh mint, large whole lettuce leaves and a dipping sauce.  Wrap everything in the lettuce leaf, dip  and eat.  So simple and so fresh.

I'm on it.  I take my mission seriously!  That's why I'm an insomniac and writing at this time of the morning.  Always thinking....

I was just in Thai Son the other day for lunch and saw bahn mi on the menu- two versions (chicken or beef) with pictures on the side.  Is the bahn mi mentioned here that's not on the menu something else?  I'd like to try it one day but want to make sure I'm ordering the right thing.  Thanks!
