I don't know about the new half hour rule...I prefer the idea to limit laptop usage to slow hours.  The shop lost my husband and I as customers awhile ago when the laptop invasion started.  There was never a seat available and I felt like the laptop users were given carte blanche on their time.  Under the new rule, their time is limited, but that's not going to help me when I walk in (without a laptop) and want to sit down and eat for 15 minutes.  There will just be more turnover of laptop users in there.  It doesn't make sense that such a small shop would include Wi-Fi as part of their business model.  How many more customers like us are they losing to accommodate the smaller number of Wi-Fi users?

And who says that all the laptop users are there for the free WiFi?  Maybe they're just working offline, which if this is the case, WiFi is least of the issues.

I really like Espresso 77, but I too have to admit that I find that I do more take-out than eat in because of the laptops.  It just seems that the hours that I'm available to stop in seem to coincide with the hours that people are working there.  For example, I meet with a friend for coffee once a week and each time we've tried to go to E77, the tables are occupied by LT users.  As a result, we'll end up at Lety's.

Hey folks,

Each one of those tables has 2 chairs. Sit in the other chair. That is why it's there. You don't give someone in the subway an extra seat, do you? You don't actually have to talk to the LT user. In fact, if they are working, give them their space, but don't let them take your space.

The scrambled egg, ham & cheese wrap, crisply toasted, is amazing for breakfast or anytime. It is huge and great for an early dinner. That and a coffee is a whole meal anytime. Mmm, tomorrow maybe.

In addition to the sign I saw posted today, which is a very reasonable policy, perhaps a computer section (yes I know it would be very small) would be a good idea, at least during peak hours. I don't know how popular the big seats in the window are, but perhaps they could be replaced by a narrow table set up just for computer users.

Or, better yet, Espresso 77 could open up a roof deck with plenty of seating for all!

I like E77 but the last two times I went there a girl who works there was not very professional.  She talks about the customers when they are right there, in hearing range.  She is mean to her fellow employees, I heard her yell at another quiet girl who works there.  She waits a long time after you order 2 things to tell you one of the things is not available, then you have to get the one thing and go to another place to get something else to eat.

Not sure how professional a kid can be. I am assuming it's a kid--by the description.  Not to say that it's okay, and one can make a complaint and this might help the person to be a little more polite and helpful.

Slightly off topic, but I've been wanting to know for some time ... does 77 have soy milk? If they do, I'm totally there to get coffee.

I think Soy costs extra though. I'm not sure why some places charge extra for this and some don't. I haven't bought regular milk in a long time, but don't they cost nearly the same? And Soy Milk stays fresh much longer.

I'm torn.

I really do LOVE that E77 exists and I applaud the owners for taking a risk and opening up such a great and needed place in JH.

On the other hand, I work from home, and sometimes it's nice to get out of the house for a while. I admit E77 is small (and maybe these policies would change if they ever expand), but I try to be aware of the realities of the situation when I work at a coffee shop, and try to buy a beverage every hour or so, as well as lunch or a snack. If I'm doing this, I don't really want to have to pay $5 for a half hour (I *think* that's the rate) for the right to use my laptop.

I admit, this is a dicey issue. Like many other things in life, a few bad apples always seem to ruin it for everyone, and I don't think it's the majority of laptop users that are guilty of hogging the chairs. Yesterday I was there for an hour (no laptop) and there was very little turnover -- me, a guy reading a book in one of the leather chairs, 2 people from HSBC having a lunch meeting, a mom with a kid in a stroller, a guy writing in a notebook, and one woman working on a laptop. Based on this small sample, I'm not sure I buy the fact that laptop users are the main or only reason it's hard to get a table there. The place is small, it's comfortable, and people (laptop users and others) like to hang out there.

As the owners have said in a previous post, this is a work in progress. I think the wireless fees seem a little steep, but they will keep people from camping out at tables with a laptop. I'm not sure what effect, if any, this will have on their bottom line, but I wish them the best.

Hi - Julie here to clarify...

You can credit purchases of food and drink toward the $5 per hour (on weekdays, it's per the half hour on weekends) - i.e., if you buy $3 worth of food or drink during your second hour, then the computer fee is only $2.

Basically, this is helping us deal with the 5-hour campers who only bought one tea during the course of their stay and were slowly driving my sweet husband to a nervous breakdown...90% of our laptop users are good folks who are thoughtful with how they utilize this service.

And I know that it's not just people with laptops sitting for long periods of time but don't you pay for WiFi yourself?
There will always be people who are inconsiderate or just plain oblivious to others.. with or without laptops.  I'm glad you found a way to deal with this.  I'd like to think that your notices that talk about being considerate to other patrons will strike a chord with the others, too.

I like you in the neighborhood and want you to make a profit so you can stick around.
First, do no harm.

I stopped by earlier tonight and ordered the chicken curry sandwich.  Buddy, I'm not sure if I thanked you for the recc, but I absolutely love this sandwich.  I also got a nice sized sample of their gazpacho...perfect for warm weather days.  Now I'm anxious to try their breakfast wrap!
