Neighborhood Chat / Re: UPS Store - long lines

I stopped by Saturday afternoon around 12:45pm and it was about a 45 minute wait at that time too. I had thought maybe it was because it was the weekend but I guess not. Thanks for the update.

Real Estate & Home Improvement / Re: Electrician
« on: June 26, 2019, 06:11:22 PM »
I used York Electrical Contractors out of Flushing recently for my renovation. They updated my kitchen electric, added outlets, and re-routed my electric stove wiring.  They checked all my outlets in the house and fixed the reverse polarization (or something) on the outlets that needed it.

My contractor thought their price was fair.  Phone is 718-353-7227.

Real Estate & Home Improvement / 1930's Door handle fixed
« on: June 26, 2019, 06:07:53 PM »
I have an interior door handle that left to its own devices will trap me in my room for all eternity.  I love the antique handles but clearly need to have the latch mechanism fixed.  Currently I just have it all taped over so I don't get stuck.

I don't want to call any old locksmith who might butcher the door. Does anyone have a recommendation of someone who might be able to do this? It feels like a low-key handyman project or locksmith project (I don't know) but I just want to be sure I am using someone who knows what they are doing and can preserve the handles while fixing the internal issue.

Pets and Animals / Cat sitter
« on: May 29, 2019, 02:02:08 PM »
I moved to JH recently and had to give up my longtime catsitting service since I'm now out of range. Ideally I would like to find another service not just an individual. I liked having online payment services and a well-administered process.  Does anyone use a service in JH that they like?

NicoleS, Sweeten introduced me to Aleks at Sync. It was a bonus that he lives in Jackson Heights - we were often able to meet in the morning before work and go over things.

I learned a lot from Sweeten and got some great ideas from their blog. I ended up using personal referrals to contractors but that wasn't a perfect system since we all have different tolerances/budgets etc. Sweeten makes a lot of sense.

I just used Andrew Bartels for my kitchen renovation in my JH co-op with IKEA cabinets (Semihandmade fronts). http://www.bartelscarpentry.com/about

Beautiful renovation, Nicole. I love your floor — and that light fixture! Is that from Schoolhouse Electric?

The light fixtures are Rejuvenation. The floor is Ann Sacks Ermanno Geometric.  I kind of went deep into the Art Deco styling. Did I see yours on Sweeten? What a great dramatic backsplash.

I have hired Kosker Rugs a couple of times over the years for cleaning my Turkish carpets. I believe they use the method you describe. My carpets are vintage and wool and was happy with the result. https://traditionalrugrepair.com/

He demo'd the old cabinets and floor and installed a very complicated tile floor, did the cabinets, backsplash, installed shelves, hooked up all new appliances, expanded a doorway and built an archway to match the original archway, painted the whole apartment, and refinished all the wood floors.  He has a small crew and may be booked up but I was very happy with the final outcome.
