Neighborhood Chat / Re: Mask Wearing / Not Mask Wearing

I never wear a mask in public, unless required by a store. The most current immunological and serological medical research completed by the SWISS POLICY REASEARCH  center states that there is a 0.1% lethality rate for COVID, same as a strong seasonal influenza.

Based on 237+ deaths in Jackson Heights (11372) so far and a population of around 66,000, we already have a 0.35% lethality rate, if you assume 100% of Jackson Heights has been infected.

But it's unlikely that 100% of Jackson Heights has been infected. If only 20% has been infected (the NYC average antibody rate) then the lethality rate in Jackson Heights is more like 1.75%.

The real answer is probably somewhere in between, maybe 1% lethality rate. But 0.1% is clearly wrong.

If someone is following the rules, then they are being responsible.

lol at this 3rd grade level understanding of civic responsibility.

This 100%.

Following the "rules" is not sufficient to be responsible. Sometimes following the "rules" is not even necessary to be responsible, if the rules are wrong or are being abused.

The death count for Jackson Heights is still increasing (now at least 237) and if there are actions we could take that reduce the chance of unnecessary suffering then we should be taking them. Like wearing masks all the time.

Given that Jackson Heights was one of the worst hit neighborhoods for coronavirus in the entire world, with at least 236 deaths here so far, trying to justify not wearing masks seems stupid

For lead testing, I've seen http://epafirm.com/ recommended several times. Not sure about lead abatement, but maybe you could ask them?

As a non-WP resident, I'm curious about how long a shareholder can sublet their apartment. Also which is it, sublet after two or three years?

Things may have changed since I read about this, but:

* Subletting is not a guaranteed right (subject to board approval, and the board is currently controlled by the sponsor, not by residents)

* If approved, you can sublet for up to 4 years (lifetime maximum) after 1 year of residence, but your maintenance will increase by 10% while subletting. Since the maintenance is already high, this could be a $100-$200 increase in your monthly maintenance.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Have you tried Informed Delivery from the USPS

The USPS Informed Delivery alerts are great, several times we only found out about missing mail because something showed up in an Informed Delivery alert but never actually arrived.

UPS and FedEx also offer similar alert services as well

Sounds like a sublet. Little fast to already have one of those.

Not really? Especially if you consider that whoever bought the un-renovated apartment in 2016 may have already lived there for a long time as a renter before buying it.

According to https://www1.nyc.gov/site/nypd/bureaus/patrol/find-your-precinct.page, the area that most people would consider Jackson Heights is really in the 115th Precinct, not the 114th Precinct. So the article seems misleading.

Also here's a photo of the view that some of the apartments have. Not bad 8)

Have there been any updates on the fitness center? Last I heard, it might be ready early/mid next year?
I'd say closer to mid/end of next year. They're HOPING to get to the basement by the start of the new year. And the fitness center will come last, I would imagine.
Thanks! So assuming the basement gym takes ~forever to get done, has anyone joined any good local gyms instead? I saw Blink Fitness and Planet Fitness were nearby, and a few other gyms in Astoria...

Re: FiOS, I gave Verizon a call and they said that Washington Plaza still had copper lines and that they had not even begun installing FiOS yet.

The Verizon representative said that they were not even sure if enough residents wanted FiOS, and that more residents would have to contact Verizon first. After making a decision to install FiOS, it would then take 6-12 months to complete. So maybe 2020?

I'm not sure what the real FiOS status is (this seems inconsistent with some of the earlier comments), but that is what the Verizon representative told me on the phone.

Thank you very much for the details!

By the way, here's the new (non-combined?) apartment with the washing machine:

Hmm. Our understanding is that the sponsor still owns most of the apartments, but I'm not sure how many shares the unsold apartments have...

Unrelated: we also saw some comments from back in 2016 that FiOS was being installed, but it seems like that never finished. Does anyone know what the status is now?
