Neighborhood Chat / Re: Anything better then time Warner internet?
« on: January 02, 2018, 04:55:49 PM »
I have TWC Spectrum and absolutely hate it. The problem isn't the speed but the intermittent disconnectivity since it's a shared line for the whole building/hub, compared to FiOS which is dedicated line. We use a Nest cam to monitor our baby and it'd go offline pretty much every 2 hours and that's dangerous. Definitely FiOS all the way.

@MrPlaza, I think there's a combined unit every building? I know in my building D there's another combined 3br unit on the 1st floor. Which building are you in?

Also I just found out that 80% of the floor has to be carpeted. Do we just have to get a service to do this on our own? It seems a little weird that the hardwood floor is so nice but the house rules require carpeting?

Restaurants & Food / Re: Jolibee on Roosevelt Ave

Jolibee is definitely better than KFC and other US chains (although probably just as unhealthy). They do have filipino-specific items, which are awesome for neighborhoods like Woodside.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Amazon HQ2 in LIC? Yay or Nay?
« on: October 20, 2017, 12:25:50 AM »
I'm a Software Engineer and personally I'm not a fan of Amazon putting its 2nd HQ in LIC (and Amazon as a company itself, see https://sites.google.com/site/thefaceofamazon/ for reference). It'll create an adverse effect on housing market that's already over-populated and unaffordable and being in tech myself, the culture is neither good nor diverse. Boston might be better (close proximity to MIT/Harvard, although that's not a problem for 1st HQ I don't see it being a plus for 2nd). Big tech salary is rarely geo-adjusted (except internationally) so they get paid the same whether here or Nebraska. If Amazon thinks they have a better chance recruiting in NYC then they're wrong. Amazon already has an office on 34th & 6th and they already have trouble recruiting.

Only the 3 and 4 bedrooms have hookups. The building can't handle 200 apartments with their own washers.  I promise you I want one as much as you do but it's not fair to the other tenants.

Prewar drain pipes can only handle 7 gallons of water a minute. If a bunch of people installed their own washers we would have soapy backups in our sinks (it used to happen to me in my former apartment). Dishwashers are ok because they don't use as much water.

I don't know if it portable washers use less water but my guess is that they aren't allowed. It can't hurt to check with the super; you never know.

Congrats on your upcoming baby!

Edited:  good point about the $$$, n00b; that must be a factor.

Thanks Lilybell, I'll check w/ the super. BTW how's the super situation and the etiquette for this complex? At my current building I'd tip the super for small stuff and pay him a certain rate for more involved jobs (like replacing old radiator or broken cabinets and such). I assume here's the same?

Restaurants & Food / Re: Addictive Banh Mi, Beer and Cheese
« on: October 15, 2017, 04:08:10 PM »
The bahn mi at Addictive are seriously next level.  Since moving to JH from Los Angeles eleven years ago, I've searched the boroughs for a good bahn mi.  There was a place in Chinatown about eight years ago that was pretty good, but it closed down.  Pho Bac is pretty good for pho and pork chops, but their bahn mi are abysmal.  Thai Son is convenient but mediocre all around.  JoJu in Elmhurst is disappointing at best.  Bun-ker has a half-decent bahn mi (and a killer pho, and some legit entrees), if you're willing to schlep out to an industrial wasteland in Ridgewood and stand outside for an hour.  It's been pretty grim on the vietnamese sandwich scene.  But...

ADDICTIVE'S BAHN MI ARE THE REAL DEAL.  The bread is perfect--crisp and crunchy on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside.  I've tried the original and the chicken so far.  The filling hits all the notes--spicy, sweet, salty, sour, umami.  The pickles are crunchy and toothsome, there's just the right amount of spice...the sandwiches are filling and hearty, but also clean and crisp and leave you feeling sated but not logy.

The beer selection is fun, and pairs well with the sandwiches (my partner and I tried the Sierra Nevada Tropical IPA and a German white beer I can't recall--both were delicious).  If they did take out, I'd probably pick one up on the way home more than once a week.  Even so, I'll be back often.  Sorry for the full-throated rave, but I'm legitimately bowled over that New York City, let alone Jackson Heights, has a fantastic bahn mi place.  And it's within walking distance!  Super psyched.

How's the banh mi compared to Joju? The location is definitely better for me since Joju is pretty far down south.

Yes. There’s laundry in the building. But the three bedrooms (and ours) have washer/dryer hookups. So not sure if there’s a bogus contract like that in place. I think the bigger question is how one would install a washer without a water line hookup

Portable washer either uses a bucket of water or regular sink water and just have outlet hose to the sink. That's why they can generally only wash like 5 lbs of clothes (like 2 shirts & a few t-shirts, but since baby stuff are tiny it's actually substantial). My worry is if there's fine and stuff. We'd still use the laundry room, but we don't accumulate enough things for a normal load and baby throw up all the time, thus needing to wash so often...

Quick question: Would the board be ok with a small 1cu ft portable washer? My wife's due soon and we forsee a ton of washing tiny little items every day :(

Sponsor attorney said our apartment should be ready my 10/17. How long does it usually take from that point to closing date? We're cutting pretty close to our due date :(

Congrats MrPlaza!! Our floor just got done hopefully we can close & move in soon (before our baby's born). Do they have FiOS Internet yet?

No, There is no FIOS yet. The FIOS cable goes to the basement but it is not hooked up to the floors because the management office wants to wait until after the hallway renovations.

But isn't hallway renovations like years to come? I thought they're prioritizing apt reno, then hallway no?
