Real Estate & Home Improvement / Re: Replace Historic Windows
« on: March 11, 2017, 11:34:14 AM »
@Dotley - I believe it is only for the side of the building facing the road, there looks to be some guidance for secondary facades. Check out the LPC window guide linked to earlier in this thread.
@am315 - I can see the co-ops or responsible owners wanting to maintain the general styling (like the 6 over 1 arrangement on Elm Court). For new vinyl windows, it isn't expensive to get a little molding added. But if you need custom wood windows with custom glass, that's a serious investment.
@Benoit - Thanks for the insight. That at least sounds like well motivated reasoning on behalf of LPC, but unfortunately in reality, I feel homeowners will hold off on replacing windows for a long time - some of these original windows are approaching 100 years old! Unintended consequences...

Interesting discussion. It looks like for small buildings, one must match material for replacement windows well as the other criteria. However, what if you (and most of your neighbors) already have vinyl windows installed? Are these "out of spec"/in violation? Or perhaps these are grandfathered in? In that case, if one wants to replace their windows does one need to file the paper work - and if so, are the replacement windows meant to match the original historic windows? How confusing!

To those who say to move if you don't like it must not live directly under the path (76/77). It's like they're landing in your living room.

Why not do it during weekday when most people are at work. All these complaints seen to fall on deaf ears and I'm sick of it.

I live on 77, so I feel your pain.

At the town hall on this last year (with Dromm, Peralta, Crowley), I think the Port Authority said they didn't do it on week days for two reasons: there is a lot more flight traffic on weekdays causing even more frequent noise, and it would severely disrupt school because it is hard to teach during the noise (although, school is wrapping up for the year shortly...).

JH Post reports it was closed for a health violation: http://jacksonheightspost.com/health-dept-temporarily-shuts-37th-ave-pizzeria/

I assume when they were closed and cleaning it last Thursday, it was in response to that. They look to be open again.

Looks like someone removed the tree that was hit. However, the telephone booth is leaning at a precarious angle. I called 311 to report it as potentially unsafe, but after a lot of back and forth, they said they would not do anything about it. Any idea who maintains phone booths and can repair it?

Thanks for reposting the link. I made a complaint.

The Towers were probably the best - loved the mature trees and the levels/layers  (not flat). But so many of them are great oases from the city noise. I also really liked the Chateau, Hawthorne, Hampton, and Elm Court (trees!). Some of them let residents use the lawn, which I think is great.

We went on the self-guided tour on Saturday. It was our first garden tour. Really enjoyed seeing all the gardens throughout the neighborhood! Looking forward to seeing the ones that are having a lot performed on them next year.

Are there any alternative gyms in JH? I'm new to the neighborhood, but wondering if I should keep my membership to Physique in Woodside/Sunnyside after I move.
