Neighborhood Chat / Re: Prevalence of Gangs in Jackson Heights?
« on: July 16, 2008, 06:33:49 PM »
No worries, I am quite calm actually, in a peaceful, detached, Zen like manner.

Recreational reading by American youth is at pitiful levels, irregardless of racial/socioeconomic status, etc. etc.  The kind of kids who are most at risk for gang activity and would most likely be persuaded by Williams' words probably don't read a whole lot of books to begin with, even if it's required in school.

Actually, here's the covers of two of his books:

There's something a bit odd about the marketing of those two books, perhaps a little irrelevant.......I can't quite place it.......let me ponder it and report back to the forum what that is when I figure it out.......

That's true, even his books are easy reading. Well, if it can help at least one person. I think the marketing is probably odd because the product was was written by a convicted killer. There may have been some controversy about publishing it, making a killer a celebrity. Oddly enough, seems that's what it did.

Funny, I think I read more books as a kid than I do now. Probably has a lot to do with the internet.

Who's Tookie Roberts?

Or perhaps you're referring to Tookie Williams?

As for "Arnie pulling the switch", the relatives of Albert Lewis Owens, Yen-Yi Yang, Tsai-Shai Lin, and Yee-Chen Lin have nothing but memories and tombstones now, thanks to this loser......

Sorry, got the name wrong.
Also calm down,  I am not debating the issue of whether or not they should've killed him, just making a comment about his appeal for a stay of execution.  That's what I dislike about these type of forums, people misinterpret the reader's intent and go on the attack. However, it was interesting that a few celebs (not counting Snoop dog-former gang member) fought for him.

However, I must say, loser or not, he did write some compelling info on what it's like in prison and stupid kids are to think that getting involved in a gang is. Even if he's not someone to emulate or look up to, he did, in my opinion, write some pretty powerful words. Stuff that goes on in prison is worse than I had even imagined, and i've heard some personal stories. One of my co-workers (also a former gang member), has given me the lowdown.

They should only read something written by Tookie Roberts during his 20 years on death row before Arnie pulled the switch.  Lots of kids think being in a gang or going to prison is going to be a better lifestyle than what they're around. Some of them have little or no identity and apparently gangs and gang-speak give them this. I'm not so shocked by that website though.

I am constantly seeing The Indian/Pakistani Gang Members around 74th,  73rd street and on Broadway.   At the early morning hours between 12 midnight and 3 AM, many times they are hanging around and many times in fights with others and sometime with girls.  I've see them trying to kick the glass and break the door to the restaurant on the corner of 72nd St and Broadway.  911 has been called all the time.  I do see police patrolling the area at night and they go into the alley ways with flashlights.  In the Summer months the problems are more frequent.

I was visiting reletives around that area not too long ago, and saw a house that appeared to be involved in the drug business. The reletive I was visting informed me that the police have been to that block several times making arrests. It appears that most of the block are Indian (Punjabi) or Pakistani. So, I guess gangs and crime are across all cultures. My guess is the drugs involved are forms of opiates and/or marijuana. Just a guess.

Okay so I'm very excited to have Tomo two blocks from me.  I know I was less than enthused when I first heard about them, but I'm singing a new tune.

Went today for the lunch bento box special. LOVE THEM.

Went yesterday. Good healthy selections.

I tried the smoked turkey wrap with avocado, but found it a bit dry.  I asked for a bit of honey mustard dressing on the side, and that did the trick.  It was very good!  Like Buddy said, there's outdoor seating, but the outdoor area is so tiny and it happens to be right in front of the very busy Q66 bus.  I'll definitely be going back though...breakfast next time.  Thanks for pointing this place out Kate!

My pleasure. I had the greek wrap for breakfast today.

The answer to this question may be obvious, but is Cafe 89 on Northern Blvd. and 89th Street?  I ask because I know there's a CVS in the low 70s on Northern.  I'm a wrap loving person and am always on the hunt for a good wrap!

It's definitely on 89th street. They breakfast and lunch/dinner wraps. The place gets very busy on weekends. There are 2 CVS stores on Northern Blvd. The one in the 70's is next to IHOP.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Gay in JH

Hi EJ,

Welcome to the neighborhood !

JH does have a vibrant and active gay population, even outside of the bars on Roosevelt Ave. which at the moment you are too young for.

I believe the diversity center has events that don't involve alcohol. This forum often discusses bars and nightlife, however, those aren't an option for everyone.

Lilith - How did you know they were prostitutes, were you being propositioned? Point is that if me and Prester want to wear pink tutu's and tiaras on Roosevelt Ave, we have every right not to be harassed by the police. Prester might get some comments, but that's because he shops at Walmart.

I've gotten propositioned, and I don't look like what we typically think of as a prostitute. A lot of factors go into making assumptions.

I had heard things about Romanticos, I have been trying to gather info to shut-them down.

I had also been told that they have prostitution in the basement.

I am going to make a formal inquiry to the officials, we do not need this filth here

Doesn't mean they won't navigate towards a different type of venue, such as a storefront, etc. Prostitution was occurring in Elmhurst private houses as was frequently in the papers a few years ago. As per the "filth" element, I actually feel sorry for some of those that prostitute themselves, and even some of the "clientele" (those who have serious and very real sex addictions). What I consider the real evil to be is those that take advantage of others weaknesses and prey upon them.

Perhaps CCTVs would have helped catched the shooter (...I doubt it it though), but I don't think it would have helped much with the overall problems ailing Roosevelt Ave.  In my opinion, for JH city officials to recommend that NYPD and the city install cameras on Roosevelt Ave is like recommending a Band-Aid for a bullet wound.  It simply sounds like the city officials that represent JH is passing the buck to the NYPD!  I don't like budget cuts to the police department any more than the next person, but the situation on Roosevelt didn't get to this point yesterday...its been a long time coming, no?

Who licensed the shady bars and strip joints on Roosevelt Ave?!?  If we (collectively) allow such establishments to exist during good times, why should we be surprised that things may get ugly during economic downturns?

If these establishments didn't exist on Roosevelt Ave, perhaps we would have less problems.  The shooting is probably just the tip of the iceberg that is the most visible to us...if the drug, prostitution, fake ID, etc problems are tackled first, there would probably be a decrease in more violent crimes too.  Even tackling lifestyle issues such as excessive honking, double parking, ear-shattering music from passing cars may help!  Maybe I'm being silly, but if a person is constantly getting ticketed for his excessive honking, double parking and ear-shattering music as he is passing through JH to get to Roosevelt Ave, he might not go through JH as often!

Well, a friend of mine has heard many stories about pay-offs, which isn't really news anywhere you go on any level.

Not sure how professional a kid can be. I am assuming it's a kid--by the description.  Not to say that it's okay, and one can make a complaint and this might help the person to be a little more polite and helpful.

Hi Everyone,

Speaking for myself, I hope at the end of this conversation, Espresso 77 comes out for the better.  I want to see this neighborhood gem do well.

Patrons of e77 that bring their laptops in and treat e77 as their personal office for the whole day whilst only buying a cup of small coffee is probably not the kind of business that will allow e77 to thrive.

BUT, I'm not sure it is all that useful to characterize every patron with a laptop in this manner.  I've seen two laptop users sharing a table.  I've seen laptop patrons getting up every 30 minutes to buy another cup of coffee (while making a pitstop at the loo).  I would argue that it is much too easy to characterize every patron with a laptop as the source of the problem simply because they are the most visible in a very tight space.

If achieving a high-turnover is our only concern, shouldn't e77 be worrying about the mothers and nannies that drag in their kids - occupying more than one seat - while only ordering a cup of coffee?  (Let's not even discuss the screaming that those "awful" kids do that can drive other patrons up the wall)  What about the older patrons who seem to hold court both inside and on the benches outside e77 during the day whilst nursing their one cup of coffee...how do they contribute to e77's bottom line?

Suggestions made above such as posting a sign limiting computer usage to 30 minutes reminds me of fast food chains like McDonalds.  Treating laptop patrons like the homeless and vagrants that camp out at McD seem a little extreme.   Moreover, I certainly don't want the nice granny enjoying her cup of coffee on a sunny afternoon to be booted out of the shop after 30 minutes.  Why should the 30 minute limit apply only to computer users?

In my opinion, there is nothing "cool" about laptops at a coffeeshop per se, but it is the diversity of people visiting a store that serves a quality product that makes e77 cool.  Young and old, laptop and non-laptop, etc, etc makes e77 cool.  This mix of people and the energy they create...and not just the brightly colored walls and artwork makes e77 an attractive store to go plop down 3 dollars for a cup of beverage.

And for those that are "put off" by the computer users at e77, I know of other people who avoid shops like Lety's and Dunkin Donuts because they think its used by the senior residents of JH as a lounge.

My suggestion would be to limit the number of laptop users at e77 to perhaps 3 patrons at any given time.  That way, laptop users continue to contribute to the diversity of e77 while making a less significant impact on turnover rate and seats occupied.  Those that use e77 as their office will be constantly asked by incoming patrons carrying laptops how much longer they were planning to stay.  Plus, the nice barristas at e77 won't have to become "hall monitors" with stop watches.
For me, I love the diversity...best illustrated by the past two story hours at e77...moms, dads and kids, older folks...all with drinks in hand...and a few laptop patrons sprinkled in for good measure!

Not sure I'd characterize someone else's kids as "awful" Screaming is what kids often do. It might not be pleasent, it might not be the greatest behavior, but, it doesn't make them horrible kids.
