Neighborhood Chat / Publicize this site
« on: August 18, 2021, 06:49:45 PM »
I would guess that most of our JH neighbors aren't aware of this website.  I was thinking that it would be a good idea to hand out flyers at the Sunday farmers market.  (I work Sundays, so I can't do it myself.)

Thoughts?

Neighborhood Chat / Jackson Heights Garden Tour
« on: August 07, 2021, 11:37:55 AM »
Thirty years ago, JHBG first launched its Historic Jackson Heights Weekend highlighting our unique garden community.  And over the decades people have come from far and wide (and, of course, close to home) to attend the exhibit of original photographs and ephemera, a slide presentation, the garden tour and the walking tour.  Attendance has grown to a total of over 300 for all events over the last few years.

Sadly, the pandemic forced the cancellation of the June 2020 and June 2021 events. However, we are preparing for a “slimmed down” version this September. We invite you to join us.  Tickets are $10 for each tour.

Garden Tour: Saturday September 18th Noon to 4pm
Raindate: September 25th

We anticipate 14 gardens participating this year.  This is our first autumn tour offering a unique opportunity to view the gardens as summer comes to a close.

Purchase tour tickets in advance at Espresso 77 (35-57 77th St) or on the day of the event in front of the Community Church (35th Avenue between 81st and 82nd St).  We also hope to have books and T-shirts available for sale.

Walking Tour: Sunday September 19th at Noon

Tours will meet at 11:45 in front of the Community Church.  We ask that you reserve in advance by calling (347)-766-9129 so that enough guides are available to keep each tour group under 20 people.

Neighborhood Chat / Painted security gates
« on: June 07, 2021, 07:49:13 PM »
I had a thought that it might look cool if we had artists paint murals on storefront security gates (like the one attached.)
Instead of looking at bad-graffiti-covered gates or plain metal gates, we'd see art.
During the day, then the stores are open, the gates would not be visible.  But at night when the gates are lowered, it would look pretty awesome I think.
One artist per storefront.  Professional artists, college art majors, high school art students, and yes graffiti artists.

What do you guys think?

Clean Streets returns to 69th Street Corridor

Saturday June 5  9-11am
Meet @ 9am at the corner of 69th Street & 37th Avenue
Arriving later? Walk north along 69th St to find us.

NYC’s fiscal crisis seems to have been averted, but the cleanliness of our streets remains an issue.  It's up to us to take proactive action and clean up our neighborhood.

Last November our Clean Streets campaign successfully returned with a dedicated group of volunteers clearing the trash-strewn corridor on 69th Street from 37th Avenue to Northern Boulevard.

We return to 69th Street on June 5th.

JHBG will supply the gloves, masks, brooms, garbage bags, and brooms.

Please let us know if you can participate by emailing us at info@jhbg.org

FYI:  Foodtown on 37th will take your old plastic bags.  They presumably recycle them.

I saw it too.  I was told by an Elmhurst Hospital maintenance worker that it "lives" at/near the hospital.  He said that it has an injured wing and can't fly.

Neighborhood Chat / Pigeon poop in Food Dynasty outdoor produce bins
« on: July 08, 2020, 05:16:18 PM »
Not a one-time thing.  I see pigeon droppings in these outdoor bins each morning when I pass by Food Dynasty.

Yes, I reported it to 311, tho not sure what'll come of that.
