Neighborhood Chat / Naked Cowboy sighting
« on: May 16, 2020, 04:40:15 PM »
Today while I was on a return leg of long walk to Steinway Street along 34th Avenue I saw The Naked Cowboy who was standing on the corner of I think 72nd and 34th. He was in his regular jockey shorts with Naked Cowboy on his rear, white guitar, and  multiple Trump 2020 signs on his front. He was chatting affably with a couple and I thought I heard him say he would be back next week. So was this some kind of performance art, a paid political event or simply the Cowboy defying the odds of finding Trump voters in this the bluest of blue strongholds of anti-Trump feeling. Does anyone know?

Neighborhood Chat / Bird sighting
« on: May 02, 2020, 12:18:59 PM »
Despite the big issues of the possible end of the world as we know it life does go on. And so I have a very small question. Yesterday  I saw what seemed to be an entirely red bird. I couldn't see a crest so I don't think it was a Cardinal but it could have been. Has anyone else seen a bird like this? Could it have been a Scarlet Tananger or Vermillion Fly catcher both of which don't appear to be native to NYC?

Neighborhood Chat / Multiple Ambulances on 37th
« on: June 24, 2017, 07:36:13 PM »
At about 7:20PM I went out and saw multiple ambulances perhaps six maybe more racing down 37th Avenue and seemingly making a turn towards Roosevelt at 76th St. although some were going down 37th beyond 76th. There were also two that went up 77th Street There was an ambulance parked in front of PS 69 but that is now gone. I also some police cars as well.I have no idea what they were responding to but with that number of ambulances all sirens blaring it was something they needed to get to quickly.

Does anyone know what the emergency was?

Neighborhood Chat / D. Keith Mano and Jackson Heights
« on: October 28, 2016, 11:36:38 AM »
D. Keith Mano died recently. He was an author who I wasn't familiar with but the obituary piqued my interest so I read and recently completed one of his novels. The novel was called "Topless" and as in many of his novels it addresses Mano's rigorous Christianity but with a twist-the novel is about an Episcopal priest who inherits his brother's topless bar.
The point of all this is that it takes place in Jackson Heights. The bar in this novel is called The Car and is on Northern Boulevard in 60's . It sounds like it could have been Jaxs, the diner, in some previous life or maybe it was simply invented as some of the things in the novel seem to be such as The Jackson Heights Free Press newspaper. Mano was from Queens -grew up in Whitestone and seemed to know Jackson Heights fairly well. The police in this novel are accurately portrayed as coming from the 115th Precinct. Anyone else familiar with his books or  perhaps even knew him?

Neighborhood Chat / The Jackson Heights Hawk
« on: September 08, 2015, 02:52:29 PM »
My son took a photo of a Hawk that had a recently killed pigeon in its claws. The picture was taken on 37th Avenue around 83rd or 84th Street a few weeks ago. Has anyone else seen this magnificent bird? Is it likely to become a permanent resident? Can we encourage it to move on to squirrels?

(With any luck I will post the picture)

Neighborhood Chat / Warning Possible malware problem
« on: May 09, 2014, 05:11:51 PM »
The topic with the byline "I'm happy I finally registered " is generating trojan and virus alerts on my computer. I use Kaspersky by the way. Is anyone else getting that? Does Jackson Heights Life have an anti-virus screen for messages?

Neighborhood Chat / 74th Street Station
« on: March 20, 2014, 02:39:34 PM »
I am a regular user of this station both the subway and the 7 line. This is the hub station for Jackson Heights yet it seems to be festering in neglect. The subway lines are always foul and dirty, a perfect environment for the ever larger rats that have made this station their special preserve. The walls are dirty, the stairs leading out of the station on 37th road are nearly always covered in litter. Recently the elevator to the 7 train has been stopping on the platform with the doors not opening for 30 seconds enough time for anyone with the slightest bit of anxiety to start wondering how long a response might take after pressing the alarm button.

Does the community have any access to the station manager on a regular basis? Only regular and frequent accountability to users of the service can there be any hope of turning around this disgraceful situation.

Real Estate & Home Improvement / Plumber request again
« on: September 18, 2011, 01:21:16 PM »
I noticed back in July that someone asked for a plumber recommendation and there seemed to be no response. Is there a a reliable, honest and inexpensive plumber that someone has had some direct experience with?  I need someone for two really small jobs.

I hope the absence of replies doesn't suggest that what I am asking for can't be had.

thanks for any suggestions
