Greek Mythology/Write Your Own Myth (Ages 7-9)
Children are introduced to Greek Mythology through read alouds and writing activities.  Each class focuses on a different myth, including The Story of Cronos and Zeus, Prometheus, Pandora's Box, Theseus and the Minotaur, The Labors of Hercules, and Demeter and Persephone.  During the last few class sessions, students write and illustrate their own myths explaining a phenomenon in nature.  We will publish our myths and students will receive a professionally-bound copy of their book.

Fun with Geometry:  Exploring Geometry through Tessellations, Origami and Tangrams (Ages 5-7 and 8-10)
Geometry is everywhere—in everyday objects, in art, in the layout of our cities, and in nature.  In this class we will explore math concepts such as symmetry, angles, congruence, fractions, proportions, and probability as we learn about tessellations, tangrams and origami. We will discover the connection between art and math by analyzing the geometry in architecture and works of art.  We will also develop our critical thinking skills through the use of logic, deductive reasoning, analytical reasoning and problem solving.  Hands-on activities, puzzles and games will stimulate your child’s interest in geometry.  Children will create their own Moroccan-inspired tiling pattern and Escher-style tessellations, make an origami mobile, solve tangram puzzles, and design a “Geometric Town.”  ?

LEGO® Pre-Engineering:  Simple Machines (Ages 6-8)
Why does my bike have gears?  How does a lever help us lift heavy things?  These are some of the questions we will answer as we learn about engineering and the simple machines that are hidden inside every complex machine.  Students will work in pairs with LEGO kits to construct models that use gears, wheels, axles, pulleys and levers.   We will also develop our math and engineering skills through problem solving challenges.  The activities are adapted from lessons developed by LEGO Education and Tufts University.
Please note—this is NOT a robotics class.

Dear Parents,

I am planning to leave my school at the end of June to teach the way I would love to teach but can’t because of the current obsession with testing.  I would like to know whether there is any interest in the sort of academic enrichment classes I am developing.  Please complete the survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/T9NM8RX  if you are interested in helping me.

The classes I plan to teach integrate multiple subject areas and students will complete a final project at the end of the course.   For example, the Greek Mythology class introduces students to the Greek Myths and guides students as they write their own myths explaining a phenomenon in nature.  Students illustrate their myths and their stories are then published in book form.

I am excited to begin offering classes this summer.  Please contact me at alexiskandrews@gmail.com if you would like any additional information.

Many thanks,

Alexis Andrews
