how much does unit charge you per shirt?  i tried again recently and it was $3.50 or $4 per shirt, which is normal for drycleaning but high for wash and press.  the laundromat on the next block is $2 per shirt for wash and press.  they are so nice at unit but i can't justify the price difference.  i should probably just start ironing my own shirts and take my actual drycleaning to unit.  they also did a great job fixing a zipper on a coat for me.
At Unit it's the same price - $2 wash and press per shirt

Real Estate & Home Improvement / Re: Good Contractor/Bricklayer

Hi, I"m just wondering if anybody has a recommendation for a good bricklayer or contractor. I need to replaster a 2'x3' hole in my kitchen wall that resulted from plumbing problems, and do some brick work on the outside of the house/garage. I don't know any contractors in the area, so I was hoping someone might recommend a contractor who's done good work for them!
Thanks,
Chris
I recommend Elvis: 646-305-1426. He does great work and is very reliable. MCP properties recommends him, and he's the super at a building in the neighborhood, too.

i used unit a month or two ago and got surprised by the cost for my shirts because they drycleaned them.  i guess i should have asked first but every other drycleaner i've used (at least 6-7 throughout the city) washes and presses men's shirts unless i've asked for dryclean.  i asked at unit afterwards and they told me they don't wash and press.  also was told same thing by french dry cleaners on the block to the west.  is this normal in JH??  second time around i ended up using the laundrymat on 37th ave btwn 76th & 77th where i'm assuming they wash and press the shirts themselves and send out the drycleaning...

My husband goes to unit and they wash and press his shirts. not sure if this is something new?

I like Gustosa's too, and the guy, for a solid slice. What's the name of the Indian Fusion pizza place? Never tried it but heard it's great.

Not a big fan of La Portena, but looking forward to trying La Fusta. My husband is Uruguayan and after two times will never return to La Portena. You can get great steak at Cafe La Nueva on 37th Ave & 85th st. i assume they're connected to the bakery on the same block which has wonderful snacks, including empanadas you should try if you haven't. We went recently to La Nueva and had great churrasco - owners are Uruguayan and Columbian. And of course, pipman is right on about El Chivito D'Oro. If you have not ever had a chivito, the ultimate Uruguayan fast food, it's a sandwich with churrasco (skirt steak), and usually bacon, tomato, lettuce, cheese, egg and, if that's not enough, mayo. Way too much for me to take on but a beloved dish by many. Just remember in general meat portions will be BIG at all these places... when it comes to cow, they don't play in South America.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Yoga Anyone?

no one has mentioned the yoga room - they have a studio in astoria and another in long island city. it's not in JH but it's not too far either, the astoria one is just over the Steinway subway stop. most of their classes are open level, suitable for beginners on up. i've been practicing yoga for a long time, and find the teachers there are excellent for the most part. i still go into manhattan from time to time, but yoga room does have classes that meet quite diverse needs (though to be honest it would be great if they'd add a level II/III class).

Neighborhood Chat / Re: spanish (or other language) lessons

Personally, I would love to find a Spanish class for my 5-year-old.  He is very interested in learning, but most of the materials I can find for him are too "educational" in flavor.  He needs something geared for kids, or for parents+kids.  There are programs like this in Manhattan, but I haven't found anything out here.  If anybody knows of anything, please let me know.

for those of you with school-aged children seeking spanish learning opportunities, how about enrolling your child in one of the dual language bilingual (public) schools in the neighborhood - for instance, PS 149 has an excellent dual language program grades K-5, and children graduate bilingual and biliterate.

I go to the one on the corner of 80th & 37th.
I had a bad experience at this cleaners - I think they're ok for cleaning but NOT for any tailoring. I needed a zipper replaced on a handmade leather purse. First they were late with the purse, which wasn't done when they said it would be because they said they needed to buy a zipper. When I did eventually pick up the purse they said the zipper was fixed, but within a few hours it broke again. It turns out they didn't replace the zipper after all, but just tried to fix it. Next time they replaced it, but the work they did was awful - tore the leather in different places creating obvious seams, and the zipper was very uneven. Because it's soft leather it would ruin the bag more to fix the job they did, so it looks bad... they did give me some of my money back for the work they did and were apologetic about it (Alex there admitted the work was bad). but still, go elsewhere for tailoring!
