78th street itself has been there a lot longer than 40 years, and the city opted to close that. why should a carve out be made for Koeppel?

Because the entrance pre-dates the plan.  Service is a huge part of the car business.  Do they just close down?  Can the city just block the entrance to a business on the theory the street was there first?

the park plan is being changed.

for Koeppel's private use.

that's a "perk" that i wouldn't get if i were a homeowner.

As I asked in another post, hasn't that service entrance been there for decades?  Do you think the city has the right to permanently take away the garage entrance for a business or a private home.  Does the car dealership have an alternative entrance it can use?

Koeppel Mazda’s new service entrance falls within the redesigned park’s boundaries and will endanger this vitally important community plan to expand open space, combat climate change, and protect the park-goers from conflicts with dangerous motor vehicles.

Is the service entrance really new?  Hasn't there been a service entrance on 78th Street for over 40 years.  Has an alternative to this longstanding entrance been suggested?  And why do we want to place children closer to Northern Boulevard.  Isn't having a buffer safer?

Is Target out of the picture?

Her tweet attacks the reporting--no named or verifiable source--but what about just saying "I am not involved in any plan to primary Hakeem Jeffries."

I find this article disturbing.  I don't believe in litmus tests--on election night as I rooted for democrats, I didn't expect every candidate would check every box.  I just wanted to win. To read that our Congresswoman-elect has targeted Hakeem Jeffries for defeat, is ridiculous.  Can she just take her seat and concentrate on serving our community and stopping the Trump agenda.  I had hoped that she would be a breath of fresh air, but to declare war on a solid, intelligent representative like Jeffries is just plain wrong.  I hope that the article is wrong, but if it's not, then I think our representative is getting too caught up in her own press.

Chicken parm doesn't come with pasta though. It's a secondi

Outside of the "elite" Italian restaurants in Manhattan, it comes with a side at every place I've ever ordered it, "Secondi" notwithstanding.  I think Romeo's charges $22.  With the side I ordered--broccoli rabe--the total was close to $30.  At the other Italian restaurant I frequent in the neighborhood, it's $23 with a side.

I had a similar experience.  I ordered the chicken parm and asked if I could substitute a vegetable for the pasta. They told me that the entree doesn't come with anything.  Just the chicken on a plate.  I don't think I have ever ordered chicken parm at an Italian restaurant where it didn't come with some type of side.

Still, I like the place and hope they do well.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Amazon HQ2 in LIC? Yay or Nay?

The heartbeat of Queens is the working class and immigrants, not billionaires. At a time when our city is facing a crisis of affordability, New York is looking to pay Amazon, the richest corporation in the world, billions of dollars to gentrify Queens. This is outrageous. Rather than creating good jobs for the community this deal will displace existing residents. We do not need nor want Amazon in our barrio.
– We need affordable housing, not further gentrification

I had read that our representative, Oit'llcostu-Cortez, will be there as an organizer. I'm sad to see some of our local advocacy groups behind the rally, too.

We can debate the pros and cons of Amazon, but it's a little late to start mobilizing against gentrification in LIC.  That should have started before the 50th glass and steel tower went up.

I don't think $19 for a salmon entree is expensive.  What should it cost, $10?  And why should salmon be less expensive in Queens than it is in Brooklyn?

I try to avoid chocolatiers for obvious reasons, but have tried Li-Lac at the Chelsea Market location. Anything with nuts is a go with me.  ;D

There's a Japanese chocolatier across from Bryant Park, Royce' Chocolates, that I'm interested in trying out. They have a few interesting combinations like their Nama Chocolate "Mojito", and Maccha Chocolate. Will report back on these!

Not a fan of Royce chocolate, is too milky and cream and is very soft texture, nothing like a your usual chocolate.

That's exactly why I love Royce.  It has a fudge-like texture that melts in your mouth.  I also love the various flavors.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: To save time in voting
« on: November 06, 2018, 03:02:12 PM »
Voted at the Renaissance School around noon.  Once I got my ballot, there was a long line for the standing desks where you fill out the ballot (there were not enough for even a moderate turnout).  Then there was a long line for the scanners, especially after two of the four broke down.  I heard later that the problem may be caused by people holding their ballot next to wet clothing.  Whatever the problem was, you get the feeling that the people working there can't handle a scanner breakdown.

The Board of Elections in this city is like OTB: a dumping down for the politically connected.  We need a ballot initiative to get rid of the BOE and replace it with an organization capable of handling an election.

Our community has been diverse for decades and our community board reflects that diversity.  I don't buy the argument that the boards consist of a bunch of White old-timers.  And eight years may seem like a lot, but some members of our board have spent years serving our community (many of them South Asian, Latino, African-American).  Again, why discourage civic engagement.

My problem with Proposal 3 has nothing to do with developers and such.  My problem is that we should be encouraging people to become involved with their communities, not pushing them out the exit doors.  These are volunteers who give up their time to serve the community.  That doesn't mean that the process doesn't need some changes: I think the power of appointment should be taken away from the borough presidents.  But if people want to serve, let them serve. We need more civic engagement, not less.

You have arisen. :)
