Restaurants & Food / Re: Saw Shack
« on: August 19, 2014, 05:20:01 AM »
Want to share my enthusiasm for Saw Shack. My wife and I went there for lunch this weekend. I ordered general tso's chicken and fried pork dumplings. The general tso's chicken was nice and crispy with a great flavor. Not too greasy or over breaded either! The pork dumplings looked home made and had nice light wrappers and were pan fried. Much better than the normal dumplings that come pre-made and have too much dough. I can honestly say that this is now my go to Chinese take-out in Jackson Heights.

Restaurants & Food / Re: Alchemy, Texas BBQ new BBQ in Jax Heights

Finally got around to visiting Alchemy tonight. Got there around 7pm and ordered beef ribs & some cole slaw to go. Enjoyed a cold beer and got to sample my order. Very nice people behind the counter and we discussed the sister restaurant John Browns in LIC which i've been to. The ribs at John Browns are Kansas city style, vs Texas style at Alchemy. I let them heat up in my oven for an hour at 200 degree's and turned off the oven after 20 min. Very good flavor and tender meat on the thicker ribs.

I ducked to the ground in my apartment. There is a helicopter circling above. I heard a loud argument outside, then 3 minutes later I heard round after round of gun fire. This is very very scary.

Real Estate & Home Improvement / dryer vent
« on: April 07, 2009, 09:37:12 PM »
So after going through the Landmarks commission, waiting a long time and then waiting for the weather to warm up I finally have a dryer vent!

Drop ceiling in the half bathroom hides the vent very nicely.

I look forward to having fluffy towels for the first time in a year tomorrow.

Which Taqueria Coatzingo?  There are two of them.

76-05 Roosevelt Ave. Link to the inspection report http://167.153.150.32/RI/web/detail.do?method=detail&restaurantId=41073909&inspectionDate=20090218.

I can't recommend my contractor anymore since he left my job 7 months ago and has only been back half a day every other month since.

With any contractor, if possible get in writing when the job should be completed by. In my situation, the apartment is live-able - I just wish the last 5% would get finished!

I got our cabinets from Weismann's in Queens, which are made in Alabama custom. Countertops are from Stonemark.

I'm kinda sad to find out the department of health shutdown Taqueria Coatzingo on 2/18/09. Anyone have any recommendations where the next best taco place is?

I've been to Mehfil and had take-out once. The second time was much better. The Chicken Tika Massala was tender and the Matar Paneer was great too. I also really like the Riata sauce.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Is Queens the New Brooklyn?
« on: April 17, 2008, 01:50:24 PM »
I've lived in Manhattan, Brooklyn and now moved to JH. Of course I was drawn to here because prices in Brooklyn are absurd. Why do I love Jackson Heights? Its Diverse, pre-war + landmarked, garden apartments, the history of the neighborhood, great food. I'm walking distance to the express trains, so I can get to midtown in under 30 minutes. Maybe if I was 10 years older I would have found a great deal on a brownstone in Brooklyn. This is not the case so my decision was the best neighborhood that fit a community I wanted to live in. But not all of Queens is Equal. I'm sure some of you have seen the Queens Crap blog. I'm also not a fan of the new construction in Long Island City. I'm sure Forrest Hills and Kew Gardens are nice - but I didn't want to live to far out.

Coming off the Williamsburg bridge is not the most pleasant experience either. Delancey street has tons of cars. Of all the bridges to Manhattan that I have riden over i'd say the Manhattan bridge is the best - it exists onto Grand, then you can go up North on Allen to first ave. Though this was more my bridge from when I lived in Brooklyn.

Thanks for the advice! I've also done the ride to Sunnyside and then get on Greenpoint ave to get to Brooklyn. I really like riding to Prospect Park or Central Park as destinations. I also feel that as long as you wear a helmet and try to keep pace with traffic you'll be just fine.

Neighborhood Chat / Cycling in Jackson Heights
« on: April 16, 2008, 10:17:31 PM »
I'm a fairly avid cyclist - but Queens is not known to be the safest place to be a cyclist / pedestrian. Maybe Jackson Heights is alright - but can anyone recommend the best routes to either bike to Flushing Meadow park  - or the Queensboro Bridge? Any other places you recommend biking to?

Thanks!

I'm pretty new to the neighborhood - but i've got to second the Taqueria Coatzingo. The tacos are the best!

I'm also a fan of Italian farms on 80th - though sometimes the guy taking my order doesn't really understand the term go heavy on the balsamic + oil.

I have always been a fan of Jackson Diner - part of the reason I was drawn to Jackson Heights as a place to live.

Does anyone know if the Japanese place on 37th ave between 80th and 81st is good? I forgot the name, but it looked ok.
