Pets and Animals / Re: Missing orange stray cat hit by car
« on: January 17, 2016, 12:45:02 AM »
While I was walking my dog earlier tonight I saw an orange tabby on 80th st between 35 & 37 avenues. It was dark out so I didn't get a good look but it didn't seem like he was hurt or limping. Then again it could have been a totally different cat. Hope the cat that got hit is ok...poor thing.

Restaurants & Food / Re: Crepes Oh LaLa

i was not a fan of the crepes at crepes oh lala. the batter they used for the savory crepes was sweet (and made for sweet crepes)...just yuck. i hope the space will be better utilized in the future.

as for other crepe places, i am a fan of the crepes at fresca la crepe, although not so much the proprietor/cook. she is always pretty curt and no nonsense with me, and never smiles or makes conversation (not that that's a requirement...but it would go a long way towards making me as a customer feel appreciated).

for other yummy crepe options, you should check out cafe triskell, in astoria. it's not that much further--just off the 36th st. stop on the r/m train.

if the child is in immediate danger, call 911. if not but you suspect abuse, then you should call the ny state central registry/child protection services, at 1-800-342-3720.

sounds awful. even if the man isn't hitting his child, the child is still listening to and witnessing violent behavior which can be traumatizing. emotional or verbal abuse is just as serious and sometimes more permanently damaging than physical abuse.

Everytime I see the "we carry a full line of Hispanic" sign on front, I have to shake my head and smirk. It seems they're doing something up front, like creating a counter maybe for a juice bar or something? I have no idea...but something's afloat.

maybe bocaito? i've never been but from a quick perusing of the menu, it seems they have some seafood type dishes that may be more within old ladies' comfort zone. just another thought to add to the mix.

thanks for your response, stew! it's great that you're keeping vegetarians in mind when creating the menu; i'm really pleased to hear that. this is all sounding very exciting and promising and i like how transparent you are and have been through the process, incorporating feedback from the community and keeping us in the loop on choices from small to big ones. as i said before, i can't wait to see the end result and to dine in comfort, style, and deliciousness hopefully very soon!

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Lockwood is coming to JH - big news!

i for one am very happy about this addition to the nabe! (ugh, nabe sounds vaguely obscene, and overtly douchey yet i used it anyway). i've been a fan of this store since even before its lockwood namesake opened up and it was called site. this will be dangerous for my wallet, as before i could safely walk the streets without being tempted by pretty things. for those who might be lamenting the gentrification that this (or other things) signifiies, let's remember that the rate of gentrification seems to be slower here than most other neighborhoods...first we got espresso 77, then starbucks, then table wine...then a long, long, lull, a revamped arunee, and now, lockwood. at this rate, jackson heights will be the next park slope in about...never.

it's cool to read about all the design elements and decisions that you are making (and no doubt these little things add up to a more significant whole) but my main concern is the food. how about keying us in to ideas you're floating around in terms of the menu composition, such as the type of dishes you're going to be offering? from the little that i've read or heard about swim two birds, it's going to be a bistro type place with french-canadian influences? or did i get that totally wrong? so...does that mean poutine and terrine de foie gras, or more french-canadian-american type of fare, like twists on classics? it would be great to get a sense of some of the types of dishes and flavors STB will offer. as a vegetarian, i'd like to put in a plea to please consider us herbivores and put at least one creative vegetarian entree on the menu (that isn't just "grilled vegetable plate"). also, maybe a heads up on the price points you're thinking...will entrees be around the $20-30 mark, higher, or lower? how about appetizers, salads, etc? i'm really looking forward to this restaurant opening up--the sooner, the better! ALSO, please consider putting the place on seamless! i'm in desperate need of new options for delivery! :)

Restaurants & Food / Re: Central Cafe?
« on: March 13, 2014, 09:33:21 PM »
i take issue with the name of the place. cafe to me suggests a sit down atmosphere, either with real food on the menu like french style, or at least a sit down place with coffee, tea, and baked goods. cafe does not equal deli, in my opinion. they should be clear about what they are actually providing. cafe is misleading and inaccurate, if this place is what others have said it will be--basically a slightly fancier version of what it used to be, which was a deli/corner store. in other news, i was sad in a way to see the original owners close down, since i had childhood memories of that place and the people who worked there. the inventory and physical space/design were sorely lacking, though, of course.

I can also offer my services. I'm currently a graduate student in social work but I have 8 years of academic publishing experience as an editor behind me. I've worked for prestigious presses such as Cambridge University Press, Random House, and NYU Press. I'm meticulous and methodical in my proofreading and copyediting style, with nary a typo or grammatical mistake seeing the light of day. I can provide a resume or references upon request.

yep, i've seen liberte at the health food store on 37th and 83, but it would be way more convenient if lemon farm carried it too. thanks for the tip re: chives. i really wish that supermarkets/fruit & veg stores around here reliably carried them too. would love it if they carried the le grand brand of pesto in pouches, while i'm at it!

how does it compare to louie's, which i found to be the best in the neighborhood, bar none? better/worse/the same? do they use fresh mozzarella on pies?

i would love for them to carry the liberte brand of yogurt and some tofu (if they don't already, i don't recall seeing any there). also, not a brand, but fresh chives for goodness' sake! the met rarely has them and no other fruit/grocery store around carries them, including this place (at least the one day i tried to find them).

the police were still searching for the guy around 10:30 as they entered my building (the monroe) and went out back into the garden and did another search then. it didn't seem like they had caught anyone at that point....but i hope they did. it seems that crime is on the uptick in the neighborhood recently what with the other incident mentioned below, the bright police lights/observation towers on 37th ave and 76 st, and 35th ave and 76 st, and the reported robbery at amalgamated bank that i heard about on the news a few days ago. i'm buying renters insurance pronto but am paranoid about home invasion while i'm still in the apartment too... oy, what is wrong with people that they can't just leave other people alone????
