Neighborhood Chat / Re: Store Opening Where Flagship Used to be
« on: November 27, 2010, 01:55:02 PM »
Anyone else think that it's totally weird that the new crap-store has a wall of cleaning products right up against the front window, where they will be, ostensibly, affected by heat and temperature, making them even more creepily toxic than they may already be?

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Graffiti increase
« on: November 27, 2010, 01:45:30 PM »
I think that there has been more around here, lately.

You know, I'm a lot more comfortable with graffiti when it is at least possessing of some artistic merit, instead of just a scrawl of initials or a stupid tag name. I'm not endorsing vandalism (and I prefer the neighborhood to be free of it), but graffiti done well can be cool art. Graffiti done poorly is just trashy looking. The stuff around here is, sadly, very definitely the latter.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Overheated Apartment?
« on: November 20, 2010, 10:24:25 PM »
Wow, I will take some of your (over)heatedness! Our apartment (also in a 1930's or so building) is way too cold. The heat is on only sporadically, not for very long intervals, and the apartment always cools down considerably within 15 minutes of the radiators ceasing to hiss. The knobs on the radiators do nothing in and of themselves; the heat turns on and off through no effort or decision of ours, seemingly at random and unpredictable times. The worst is having to shower in the morning, when it is freezing cold, the heat not having been on since 3 AM or so! We have extra blankets, and a space heater, but the latter sucks up energy and is a little dangerous, to say the least. I suppose that this is just something that one deals with when living in an old building...

Ugh, this is such a bummer. This neighborhood did not need another cheap crap store. I guess we didn't need another bank, either, but we will soon have another at the corner of 37th and 78th! I wish that rents weren't prohibitive to local businesses moving in. The whole thing makes me very sad.

Honestly, I thought that the food at Pio Pio was really expensive and really salty. And the sangria was awful.

Don't hurt me!  ;)

It doesn't matter what the crime is, someone will always find a way to blame the victim. Here, it's the poor dude's fault because he had a little money in his wallet and didn't take a cab the few odd blocks to his home. Come on, people.

Ugh, this is so awful! What is the deal with this neighborhood!? How many pharmacies and banks and cheap plastic crap / cheap import clothing stores are truly necessary within an 8-block radius? I guess it's the fault of the landlords?

Wow, what a bummer! I only went there once, but I remember it being really good.

Where in tha 'hood is a good place for fried chicken, then? I have a fried chicken craving once every 5 months or so. Most recently, I tried to satisfy it at UFC (Unidentified Flying Chickens) on Roosevelt... It was okay, but I missed the more traditional breading, and the sides there were pretty meh. Do I have to go to Popeye's (never been to one)?

From what I've heard about it, she wanted it to happen. Apparently, they are "getting back together."

And, just to reiterate a post I made in an earlier thread about this scumbag:

Let's be clear, here.

The definition, under NY Penal Law, of a 3rd degree (misdemeanor) assault (120.00 -what he was convicted of), is: With intent to cause physical injury to another person, he causes such injury to such person or to a third person.

The definition of a 2nd degree (120.05 - D FELONY) assault is EXACTLY THE SAME.

The definition for 1st degree assault (120.10), a class B FELONY (serious business), is: With intent to cause serious physical injury to another person, he causes such injury to such person or to a third person by means of a deadly weapon or a dangerous instrument.  This pretty much fits the bill in terms of what this guy did. I'd say a broken bottle is a "dangerous instrument" and that by slashing her across the face Monserrate had "intent to cause serious physical injury."

The only reason that this guy was not charged with (and convicted of) a felony is because he was a state senator. If a poor person living in the projects or a random person of color had been charged with the same crime, you had better believe that they'd have gotten slapped with one of the felony charges. People don't usually get to slash each other across the face such that 40 stitches are needed and walk.

Restaurants & Food / Re: JH Greenmarket
« on: June 06, 2010, 08:18:44 PM »
I asked the strawberry folks whether they sprayed their berries, and the fellow working the booth said that yes, they did. Alas, no strawberries for me, but I have to say, it was so refreshing that he was honest about it. He assured me that they only spray the necessary minimum and that most berry growers will say that they don't spray, but that if they say that they're likely not being honest. Without spraying, the berries are really hard to grow, he said. For folks who don't care about such things, I advocate buying berries from the JH berry purveyors! He could have told me that the berries were 100% pesticide free, organic all the way, but he didn't, and for that he gets points++ in my book. Honesty is the best policy, says I!  :)

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Lil' bit of green space....maybe?
« on: June 06, 2010, 08:10:10 PM »
It would be so wonderful to have some community garden space, here... I'd be first in line for a plot. Unfortunately, virtually all of the green space in the neighborhood seems to be within the confines of various apartment and co-op buildings. I've passed by this vacant space many times while walking the dog, and I've fantasized about its being converted into garden plots, but I have a feeling that whomever owns it (the apartment building, I suppose), wouldn't be willing to let it go. Such a space is a rare commodity in the 'hood.
