Neighborhood Chat / Dave’s Deli
« on: September 21, 2021, 09:50:17 AM »
Anybody remember Dave’s deli on 89th street and 37th ave? Best roast beef sandwich I’ve ever had, and I’ll be 70 years old.
I miss those days in Jackson Heights.

Jackson Heights of Yesteryear / 1960s Jackson Heights Garage Bands
« on: October 21, 2013, 01:09:16 PM »
I'm 61, left the Heights in 1967, returned to NY in 1969. I was in a band from 1965 to 1967, the Figments of Imagination. Members: Henry Hom, Neal Resnick, Michael Kemper, Frank Robbins and me, Ron Malpeli.

Anybody else in a band, or remember bands from that era?

<<Teachers at 149 included:  Miss Jankowski, Miss Torsney, Mrs. Clark, Miss Vonderheid,  Miss Hartman, Mrs. Blaha and Mrs. Brown.>>

20th Century Boy: Miss Torsney was my first grade teacher in '55-56. I also remember fondly Mrs. Marrotta at 149, who was my teacher for both second and third grades. An excellent and dynamic teacher.

I had Mrs. Flynn at 149 for first grade, Mrs Seidel for 2nd grade, Mrs Marotta for 3rd grade, Mrs Gallagher for 4th grade, Mrs Mailman for 5th, and Mrs Adler for 6th.

I attended from kindergarten (1957) to 6th grade (1964) and I remember each one of those wonderful ladies. My kids don't even remember the teachers they had the previous semester!

....Kayar Bakery (later Pizza Sam's) and Joe's Candy Store (later Al's Candy Store)..... one block to the west, between 86th and 87th Streets was a hobby shop called Racar’s which sold model kits, lanyard and crafts material and had a slot car track set up for the use of its patrons.

I spent a good part of 1963-1965 in Racar (AKA George's Hobby Shop) and remember Kayar deli very well where I went, almost daily, for my single portion blueberry pie....I remember the owner telling me he was going to retire and that a pizza place was going to take over....after moving back to NYC from Florida in 1969, I got me first real job at Pizza Sam....anybody remember Augie?

I really miss those day: Much simpler and fun was free.
