Neighborhood Chat / Re: Rudy Volcano closing?
« on: February 29, 2012, 02:15:45 PM »
This is really upsetting! We have such terrible cheap stores in the neighborhood, and it's not like JH is a poor community by any means.Apt rentals and homes/apts for sale aren't exactly cheap, so I don't understand why we don't have stores/restaurants that represent the buying power that this community has. It's even more upsetting to lose another great retailer to Brooklyn, where everything is going up (bk feels like the new manhattan) What's going on with JH? Sad sad sad...

I was wondering the same thing! I passed by the other day and saw this, but it didn't have any information on what they were doing. If we called 311, would they know?

I'm hoping it's a HUGE gym!! Jackson heights is in desperate need of a gym and i'm panicking now that spring is around the corner  :embarassed:

It may be some work on your part, but if you get the whole building involved, then they should be able to allow other providers. We were all going back and forth for a year about getting fios, and finally the building made adjustments so we were eligible.

My building is offering Verizon Fios now, in addition to Time Warner ,and I switched right away! I used to have 2 cable boxes, 4 premium channels, internet and phone and was paying $187. I have the same package now, and I pay $132 woo! After 2 years, price goes up to $145. Must tell you, I love Fios. My internet is way faster and the picture looks clearer. The only thing I miss is NY1 because I used to watch that a lot to know what was going on in NYC, but eh saving $50 wins that battle.

Good luck! I hope you get to switch soon!

Hi! I live 2 blocks away and it's definitely open... not sure what happened that particular day when you drove by. It's definitely still up and running though!

Omg fantastic! Thank you! I just looked up their brunch menu online http://armondossidewalkcafe.homestead.com/Menu.html

$4.50 for a mimosa is not too bad, seeing as I usually take full advantage of the unlimited mimosa specials (I sure can drink ) Hopefully other places have an unlimited ones though. I've gone to Armondo's twice for dinner and I was the youngest person there, so I'm also looking for something a bit more uppidity!

Definitely do try it! I also believe there is a back area in the restaurant that will open up in the spring to dine outdoors! I'm especially looking forward to that  :)

I probably go to this restaurant once every 2 weeks! I kind of like that's it's still a hidden gem, and that everyone keeps going to Pio Pio for overpriced food (and excessively salty might I add), as well as the smallest pitcher of sangria for $30! Ridiculous.... Pollo Inka is awesome! So glad this restaurant is only 2 blocks from my house  ;D

Neighborhood Chat / Re: A planet fitness for Jackson Heights??
« on: February 03, 2012, 01:59:58 PM »
The only gym I've seen is the one on 78th and Roosevelt (I believe), but it's so sketchy. We definitely need a big name gym in the area, like a bally's, NYSC or a Planet Fitness. Forest Hills has like 4 in a 2 block radius on Austin Street! Northern blvd would be ideal... how do we go about this?

Definitely recommend La Porteña on 37th and 75th. My next go to place La Cabaña on Northern Blvd bet 86th and 87th Streets (also an Argentinean restaurant). I love their mixed grill for 1... I eat almost 1/3 of it, and then have all this left over meat for the next 2 days! Service there is great, and they have really good sangria.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: 37th Road Pedestrian Plaza
« on: February 03, 2012, 01:46:07 PM »
How do community members get involved? When this plaza first opened, I was very upset due to the traffic situation, since my bus no longer left me in front of that entrance (a little selfish on my part  :embarassed:). But now i'm realizing how fantastic this plaza is! Having tables and chairs will be fantastic in the spring/summer/fall to just sit out and have a nice time. There's no where in the neighborhood that has outdoor seating like this, and it could really benefit to get more people to just invest in our community and the restaurants. Have any restaurants suggested taking a portion of the street to do outdoor seating?

Restaurants & Food / Re: Best Chinese Delivery/takeout

I LOVE China King restaurant between 84th and 85th street on 37th Avenue. It's been my go to place for the past 12 years! I especially like that they will easily customize your order (other places in the neighborhood I've tried pretend they don't understand my simple request of no onions in my pork fried rice!). I recommend you try this place. I live on 92nd/34th and they deliver to me... so it's probably a wide delivery range.

Restaurants & Food / Are there any brunch specials?

Hi! I'm a big fan of brunch specials around the city, especially the ones that include unlimited mimosas and blood mary's  :D

I always have to travel into Manhattan for these brunch specials and lately some restaurants have been popping up in Astoria that have good brunch deals. Are there any in Jackson Heights? I'd love to just walk to a great brunch place in my hood!
