Neighborhood Chat / Re: The Last Word!

It's too soon to actually get the last word, but I just want to wish all my fellow JH Residents the best in the New Year. We may not agree about 34th Ave and Diversity Plaza, but we agree that we're going to miss visiting this site to find out new restaurants and what's going on and who is opening in the old space and where we can find a decent haircut! I wish everyone continued health and hope to bump into you on the street some day if I ever leave my apartment again. Stay well!

I don't know how reliable this is, but one of the employees there told me he thought the owners were going to open another grocery store there. I think SuperFresh is a Kroger brand like Food Universe and KeyFood and Food Emporium. They had everything on sale at 20% off, but not much left at this point.

We went through this years ago. My best advice is to find out which insurances your doctors accept and look into the companys' prescription formularies to see which companies meet your needs. To make an informed decision you'll have to figure out how much you'll have to pay out of pocket in addition to the monthly fees.  Sometimes it's better to have a larger deductible if your annual cost goes down because your maximum out of pocket is reached sooner. Take your time and figure out what's best for your family's health and peace of mind.

JHResident, I have to ask, does someone come around in the evening and move barriers for "Nighttime OS"? I had to deal with a car parked in the crosswalk recently (on 34th) and the car's LED(?) lights beaming onto the sidewalk blinded me; couldn't see a thing. I tripped and fell. I was injured.

If each driver coming home has to do that, then it happens a lot, no? Or is it a designated person doing it at nightfall along the whole or a section of the OS?

Open Streets is a complete misuse of public resources.

The future of this city is looking pretty grim.
There are volunteers that move the barricades to the sidewalk at 800 PM. From 701 AM to 759 PM, drivers usually must move the barricades themselves.

However, I love the Open Street of 34th Ave and thank the DOT and all the powers that have gifted this fantastic resource to the people of Jackson Heights.
I'm curious what leads you to love this nuisance. Do you use it frequently, or is it the side effect of quietude that endears it to you? To me it's a minor nuisance that I can tolerate, despite the need to drive around the block and move a barricade or two to get home maybe once or twice a day. If you really love it that much, then maybe it's best that it exists, if only to make one person happier. Just, please don't expect me to celebrate with you, unless you're out there moving the barricades for me. Enjoy your open street while I grumble.

I am curious, as well.

If a person can't enjoy life and the small pleasures it offers...(like a great stroll down the Open Street of 34th Ave)...then when exactly does the enjoyment begin?
Granted a stroll can be enjoyed. In fact I enjoy strolling throughout the city, despite the lack of Open Streets elsewhere. But I grew up walking on sidewalks, and not jaywalking. I also enjoy driving, except driving in Jackson Heights during the Open Streets is like being in Midtown. But a stroll doesn't take long. Why does the street have to be closed for 13 hours so you can stroll on the street instead of on the sidewalk?

That’s strange… when I walked past a couple of days ago I noticed how many people were using it so you must have caught it on a lull, but rest assured people do use it!
Would you kindly take a photo even if you see one bike on that rack covered with bird crap in the overpass? This is the one we are talking about. I've never seen a single bike ever and am by there often. Only the same black plastic bags...and tons of bird droppings.
The bike rack on 34th Ave and 69th St. is in front of the school.
Are you talking about a Citibike rack?

Yeah, even if it was an Aldi I'm not certain I'd go there on the regular. Then again, this store was nice, just oddly expensive.. oh well.
If you've ever been to Lidl in Astoria, this site is not large enough for something that busy unless they built out the parking lot.

Thank you for the bike racK.
MUCH APPRECIATED.
Went by the bike rack today. No bicycles were parked there. The block is cordoned off for PS 398, so no one using it during the day. Seeing as there is already a wrought iron fence that could be used to secure a bike,  across 69th Street, I wonder if anyone will ever use it.  I can't see anyone biking to Bowlerama and the students at PS 398 are probably too young to ride on their own, so I wonder what the thought process was? Still, it's next to the school and doesn't interfere with anything other than maybe one parking spot, so mostly harmless.

Sorry, it seems I misunderstood the report from South Africa.  It was referring to re-infections in particular, or people who had previously been infected, not vaccinated people.  The study was not peer reviewed.

CBS News has the story here: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/omicron-variant-covid-cases-reinfection-boosters-africa-vaccine-equity/

It appears that current vaccines are less resistant to to Omicron variant. Today's report from South Africa says that the Omicron may be 3 times more likely to create breakthrough infections  That is a cause for concern for public health officials and pharmaceutical companies that have been advocating the vaccines as the best solution for the pandemic. Investors who speculate on the market have to react on early news and public health officials may have to prepare alternative measures. It remains to be seen if this variant is more dangerous than others. So far it seems mild, but we'll need a few weeks to really judge its impact.

Obey the traffic laws! That goes for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, e-bike riders, everyone.

Why? Will you park your bike there?

Yes.
Why?
What's over there besides the school and Bowlero? I don't get it. Walk to the 69th St station?

Why? Will you park your bike there? I can understand putting the bike rack at Travers Park. Is this to park the bikes so cyclists can walk on the Open Street? Or just make it easier for the local bike thieves?
