Starbucks is testing a new concept at some of its Seattle stores.  If all goes well, Starbucks fans in other states may be ordering a Venti sized wine glass.

I guess due to the economy these are desparate times and Starbuck's appears to be trying to keep their head above water by offering alcohol on their menu............I wish them luck!

Good luck with that Liquor License application. Next door to a bar?

Interesting to watch the outcome.

Every time I turn around, Starbucks seem to come up with some new plan to promote business.  This time it's instant coffee.  I saw the sign on their window yesterday advertising Via, their new brand of the instant stuff.

According to the CNNMoney.com article below, Starbucks has been having trouble competing with rivals Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds.

I understand why they would want to enter this market, as I noticed in Colombia that instant coffee is extremely popular, and therefore must be in many other countries as well.  But I don't get the pricing option which is Via is sold in packs of three cup-sized servings for $2.95 or $9.95 for a 12 pack. That makes for a cost of $1 per cup, which is Starbucks' cheapest option.

If you are buying a cup in a Starbucks either to go or to drink there, why would you need a 3pack?  And if you are buying the instant grounds to take home, I don't really believe that the $1 a cup is cheaper than brewing Starbucks coffee at home.  Am I wrong?  I actually do buy Starbucks beans and grind them at home and it seems to me that at the rate of two cups a day, my grounds last about 5-7 days -- this is for a $11 - $12 bag of beans.

I saw this advertised awhile ago. I would be willing to try something like this to bring to work- We don't have a coffee maker there, nor a kitchen type facility that would work to keep the coffee maker clean. When we did have a coffee maker, it was just gross. However, we do have a fridge where I could stash some milk (assuming that I'd remember to ditch it at the end of the week) and it's a lot cheaper than getting some drip coffee on my way to work, which is my current habit.

I guess the three pack would be like a sample pack? It would suck to pay $10 for 12 cups and not like it- they'll probably sell a lot more initially by selling a 3 pack for $3.

The New York Daily News get preliminary reactions to Starbucks' new instant coffee, Via....by the way, not good.  I'm not a fan of instant coffee, but this product has peaked my interest.  I'll have to give it a try.

Starbucks Via instant coffee gets lukewarm reviews in New York debut

Question for Shelby2:  Is the Colombian instant being prepared cafe con leche style?  I find that I can tolerate instant better when I dissolve the coffee in a mug of hot milk rather than just adding boiled water.

Hey, I just noticed that Shelby2 never answered my question above, but we'll let that slide for now.  Here's more interesting stuff.  ;)

The Brooklyn Heights Blog reports that their local Starbucks has added what's being called a "Slapuccino" to their beverage menu.  Apparently, an angry customer slapped a waiting dad on the head because said dad's baby wouldn't stop fidgeting.

Dad Slapped at Starbucks: Brooklyn Heights Justice or Just Plain Crazy?

This is crazy and so wrong.   ::)  If this story is true, I would imagine that the slapper must have been teetering on the edge to do what he did. There's really no excuse though.

That Slapper (head, not girl of the evening) should have been banned from caffeine!

I'm curious too.  I was already home from work, but my bf was on his way home from work when the ambulance/firetrucks were there.  He was exhausted so he came right home instead of investigating.
